Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Sister, don't scare me that way 2

Wednesday, I replaced the heatsink of the AMD64 of my parents. You couldn't buy a fan alone, it had to be the whole heatsink thing. 7€, not that expensive. So, for kicks I decided to replace the whole heatsink. Why, not eh? Bad, idea: the original heatsink was so stuck to the CPU, that when I tried to remove it, the CPU stayed on the heatsink and I pulled it out completely! Without opening the socket! Aaargh... BAD! I remove the CPU with force from the heatsink and I bend a few pins! AAAAAGH!!!!
Well, okay, I manage to staighten them with a screwdriver and pull it back in, install the heatsink and try to boot. Still works. Then I did a CPU-Burn in order it to see if the CPU is still completely in working order. No problems whatsoever.

*phew*

Now, today I drive over to my parents and see my sisters PC (An Athlon XP 2400+, so less powerful and only has 512Meg RAM) in the place of the family computer. I think: "fuck, the machine probably screwed up and my sister put hers in the place". I hook it up again, and boot: no problems whatsoever. I run another CD Burn in and it stays stable.

Strange....

I now think I understand: my sister is alone at home and the rule is one can only smoke in the living room where the family computer resides. I guess she replaced the parents computer with hers because her computer has tablature software and the other machines don't.

Still, she scraed the fuck out of me by doing that.

  • that become as solid as a glue, with the size of the AMD heatsink, I wonder if one can even open the socket. as far as 'replacement' fans go, they're easy to buy on the internet. myself i usually order from newegg, i believe the amd64's are using 70mm fans, which start at $2.99 (+ s&h $5 :/ for a fan i might shop elsewhere...) keep in mind higher rpm fans == nosier and for Cool n Quiet operation one needs a variable rpm fan.
    • Well, newegg is fine for US-based customers. Once you're in Europe, the shipping usually kills the savings. (And then I don't even mention the customs that can get quite expensive)

They, do, I measured them when I went shopping for a new one.

Is your job running? You'd better go catch it!
