Journal grub's Journal: TLC == False Advertising 8

I just watched a very interesting show on PBS about Archimedes' manuscripts (try to catch it on your local PBS station if you have the chance.) Anyhow, I wanted to see what was coming up on PBS so I switched to the local preview channel. Here PBS is channel 24 and TLC is 23, viewers in Winnipeg, Canada will verify this.

scroll.. scroll.. scroll.. there it was: more SHIT on TLC. "The Learning Channel" my ass.

Remember when the "L" in "TLC" stood for "Learning"? Since when did crap reality-style shows such as "Trading Spaces", "While You Were Out", "Resident Life" or "A (Baby|Life) Story" become Learning?

TLC went from decent to nauseating over the past few years.

Recall in a previous rant where I show my disgust against advertiser-driven television. Well, TLC is a victim of its own success. Certainly shows that may have sparked a young mind to think wouldn't garner the ratings of "Trading Spaces While You Were Out At The Baby Story With Paige The Drooling Moron" but they were the focus of the channel (way back..)

Of course when a network gains more viewers that means they can command more money from advertisers. Advertisers then control what you see. For shame, selling out the idea of thinking for the almighty buck.

Dear TLC; Please change your network name, it's false advertising.

  • I used to be an absolutely avid TLC watcher but these days the remote hardly ever drifts in that direction. For awhile, Discovery Civilization Channel seemed to have taken up the reigns at least where anthropology/socialogy was concerned but now my cable company no longer carries even that channel.

It's pretty much all While You Were Out. My only hope is that eventually we as a culture get over this idiotic reality TV phase and at least keep each channel to perhaps ONE reality show max ... TLCs decline has
  • I've noticed this trend as well. I'm one of those oddball college students that, when he watches TV, either has it on a Baseball game, a news channel, or a 'Learning' channel like TLC used to be. There used to be tons of interesting programming on TLC (I absolutely loved Paleoworld), but the slippery slope started with Junkyard Wars a few years ago. Junkyard Wars was borderline to begin with (it teaches how to think outside the box and all, so I guess you could learn that), but with all these new programs i

    • but with all these new programs it just teaches people how to come up with incredibly random and ugly designs for rooms that weren't that great to begin with

Yup. The best part of being divorced is never having to listen to another Trading Spaces Marathon. :) I've only sat through perhaps 4 episodes in my life, in one the designer glued straw (or hay?) to a wall in the house. The lady who owned the house burst into tears upon seeing it.

      Absolute crap.

I didn't mind Junkyard Wars when it was the British v
  • that's why I don't have cable anymore. I get all my kicks on PBS or on video.
    • I need cable for PBS, I'm in Canada ~120 KM from the border. :( There are cheap cable packages that will let me get the basics including PBS which is what I'm really thinking about doing.
      • Oy, then I would definately go with the cheapest cable you can get. Do they have Tivo service up there in Canada? I've found (My mom got it at her house) that it can really siphon out any good shows from the generally crappy programming that most networks have, and you can fastforward over ads. I don't have the money for one now, but I definately consider it from time to time.
        • I believe there is PVR service available but I'm not sure which one(s) work. Regardless, now that TLC has been off my "list" for a while there is little use of keeping the more expensive cable option. Discovery and Space (like the US Sci Fi Channel) are the only other 2 I ever watch on the extended cable channels.

Anyhow, I don't watch a lot of TV. I'd prefer to read or downl^H^H^H^H^Hrent movies. :)
  • I loved the side of TLC when I could learn something - but they obviously need revenue to stay alive, and in order to get revenue they need to have the ratings so that they can charge the proper ad fees, and in order to get the ratings, they are obviously seeing that they need to go the way that they have.

So I would go from there that it makes more sense to blame the viewing public than TLC themselves.

I used to like the Discovery channel a lot, but I noticed more recently (haven't seen it since I have mov
