Journal bethanie's Journal: Sunny thoughts are my umbrella 13
Sorry, Em, but this rainy weather is absolutely wonderful.
When I started waking up this morning and heard the sound of the rain, I smiled. The house has metal-roofed porches all along the front and back, so you can really hear the rain when you get close to the windows, and it's like music.
Got Kiddo gussied up in her rain coat, hat, boots & umbrella this morning and just went and splashed around in the yard. It was cold outside, but the house was snuggly warm when we came back in, and quickly melted away the chill.
I never let the weather get me down. Rain is inspiring -- thunderstorms are the biggest thrill. Ice is exciting. Snow is magical. The sweltering heat of summer leads to slow, languorous lounging while sipping cool drinks.
You see, I grew up in Southern "scattered clouds, highs in the upper 70s" California. Same damn weather every damn day, and rarely ever truly pretty (sky a pasty, blue-ish color, mountains obscured by haze and smog). Just about 2 seasons throughout the year -- fair or hot. An inch of rain qualifies for screaming headlines and Special Report news break-ins: "Flash flood warnings!!!"
So living in a climate where we actually have a *variety* in Mother Nature's moods (you forget she exists in California -- feels like you're on a set in a Hollywood movie studio, the elements are so predictable) is a vast improvement.
And even here in Georgia it's not quite dramatic enough for my tastes. I know it's crazy, but I'm a little jealous of Sol's frostbite coming home from work. Not that I want *frostbite*, but that I'd love to have the drama of fighting the cold like that. To face digging my car out of the snow to be able to go anywhere. I feel disappointed every time it rains in the winter but doesn't turn to snow, and a bit guilty for feeling that way because I know the colder stuff is more dangerous and inconvenient.
So, Em, you can piss and moan about the cold, soggy weather all you like. I'm soaking up the juice into my soul and letting it flow into creative endeavors like baking fresh bread and crocheting a blanket. Educating Kiddo about the glories of drainage and erosion, explaining why the water draining off is that light mocha color and where it goes. What birds do in the rain. Why it rains in the first place.
Rainy days are the perfect opportunity for adventure and discovery. So I think I'll go have some!!

There is nothing quite like seeing it snow 3" an hour, to have 50"+ at the end of an event. I love to tell this story... the year I graduated from college, 1996, graduation day was on Mother's Day. It snow 6" that day!!! 6-freaking inches in MAY!!!!
Now, where we *do* agree is on Thunderstorms. I love thunderstorms. Tracy thinks I'm mad, but when a storm is coming in, I go outside, watch it roll in,

Maybe not snow, but spend a couple of winters here and you won't be longing for the -30F any more.

I grew up in Northern New Mexico. We got lots of snow. It was mountainous, with clear skies and several gazillion stars shining on clear nights.
We GOT flash floods. Arroyos would fill quicker than snot and bam! roads unpassable.
All that is well and good.
But here's the thing.
You get to stay home in the comfort of your house.
You can listen to the rain on your roof, I have to walk 1/4mile through the shit to work.
I get to put up with the idiots who think Nascar

But I also was thinking about the days when I used to work downtown and commute from Duluth. I *still* liked "exciting" weather -- the inconvenience aspect didn't dampen (ha ha) my enthusiasm.
So there. I've run rings around you logically!!
