Journal Stargoat's Journal: Stargoat V. Collection Agency 4

I received a letter from Afni Collections last week, on Saturday, October 26. Turns out I committed an indiscretion in college. I have unpaid Verizon phone bill from 2001, back when I was in college. Uh-oh. So what does the eminently respectable Stargoat do? He checks out what his various rights are when dealing with Collection Agencies. Then he calls Afni the very first day they are open.

The first representative, a young lady named Molly, was not very nice to Stargoat on the phone. In fact, she yelled at him and was not polite at all. Bad Molly. Our friendly goat, who went into this looking for fun and amusement, pleasantly requested that Molly not yell at him. She yelled that she was not yelling. I had to ask to speak with her supervisor. Most unfortunate. Insert giggle here.

The next person I got to speak with was Christine - after waiting on hold for three minutes. Poor Christine wanted to help, but did not want to help very much it seems. Christine and Stargoat chatted for a while about the necessary of politeness. Then we attempted to find a solution.

The solution we have come to is Afni sends me a letter stating that the charge has been deleted from the three credit bureau agencies. Then, I pay the bill. All this at no charge to me - except for paying the bill.

As we all know, calls to such places are monitored and recorded for quality assurance. I think this is a wonderful idea. I offer to record Christine saying this - after all, everything I say is recorded. Christine agrees to this, then disagrees once I begin recording. Very impolite. Alas, poor Christine of Afni is a liar. But I expected no less. I permanently deleted the recording of this. As you can tell though, I have kept very good notes.

So I called today and spoke with Sue - who was most pleasant. Sue and I chatted about how important it is that everyone ends up happy when we are done. Sue told me that the letter had been mailed yesterday, but that it took up to ten days for the credit bureau to get updated. I was astounded at this (I knew it already, working in the financial sector). I said I was looking forward to receiving the letter.

Then, I called about twenty minutes later to speak with Shevan. Shevan was not as polite as Sue, but more polite than Christine and certainly more polite than Molly - who was not very polite at all. I asked Shevan if I could have the letter faxed to me, so that we could resolve this more quickly. Unfortunately, Shevan could not do this for me. I said I was sad, but that I understood.

Meanwhile, I got a credit report, to see what these folks were up to. I also have a credit report monitoring service, which totally and completely failed me. I need to chat with the people who are supposed to provide this monitoring service - my own financial company no less. Die die die!

Turns out Afni fouled up my TransUnion account. Guess I'll need Afni to pay for a copy of my credit report when this is all done - just to make sure they took the charge off.

The people at Afni are now my special friends. I look forward to calling their 800 number many times and to receiving their many and varied letters. And since they miss informed me, Sue stating that all three credit bureau companies would be informed and not just one, I think they may need to pay for credit bureau monitoring for a year for me.

  • Credit reporting firms need to die in a fire... painfully.

    I hate those guys....

  • I have an unpaid bill to Verizon from 2001. I moved and closed my account with them. They say I never closed it and kept it open for 6 months in the empty apartment. I pointed out when I got the first collection notice in late 2002 that there were no calls on the line and that, I had in fact, closed the account. They said, "La-la-la-la-la-la we can't hear you la-la-la-la-la-la!"

So, needless to say, I kept said phone records that they sent me stating that zero calls were made in that time period. Everyt

We all like praise, but a hike in our pay is the best kind of ways.
