Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: New Carpet! 11

Though not necessarily by choice...

As part of the re-financing efforts we needed to add carpeting. The previous carpeting having been pulled due to too many years (most of which were under previous ownership;-) of too many kids, too many dogs, and simply too much spillage, stains and smells. So bare wood and numerous rugs was good enough for us, but not for FHA. And, since FHA is one of the very few folks who will refinance a manufactured home without gouging you... we've been cleaning out the common areas of the house for recarpeting. (And why yes, we do have way too much crapola;-) That on the heels of sickness and adjusting to Zack's needs* has made for a busy time. I know I'll be happy when this is all done, but for now, I'm just tired.

Zack's doing well BTW, the metal brace comes off in 4 weeks, then a couple three more weeks of confinement and limited movement, and then we can start taking him for (short) walks again!

  • If I could go back in time and find the person who first thought it was a good idea to take a porous piece of fabric, lay in on the floor and tack it into place, I would, just so I could kick them in the crotch. I'm fine with area rugs, those I can wash and hang out back and beat the dirt and cruft out of them. The vacuuming can only do so much and shampooing is a waste of time and money.

I like tile and/or wood/laminate flooring, coupled with area rugs in strategic places. Carpet is evil.

    • I'm with you - except for one case and that is children. Good carpet on top of a good pad is really nice for little ones. But I think once they are past bouncing their heads off the floor - the carpet can go. Especially if it is wood that is under there - though some nice things can be done even with bare concrete.
      • Carpet is also nicer for indoor pets. Not for housetraining them necessarily, but dogs certainly are wont to playing. Carpet is just safer than slipping and sliding on hard surfaces. The other nice thing, at least for me, is that I hate shoes and socks. If I could I would go barefoot all the time. (Maybe I have some hobbit in me? It'd explain some of the eating habits at least;-) Carpet is much nicer to curl; your toes around than hard wood or vinyl.
    • I hate carpeting too, but I found an easy, cheap way to keep it clean.

      1. Buy a wet/dry vac.

      2. Take a bucket, fill it with really hot water, a bit of laundry detergent, and 2 ounces of bleach (to kill bacteria)

      3. Take a sponge mop and liberally soak the carpet a small area at the time

      4. Suck up the water (you'll be amazed at how much dirt you get up this way)

To help it dry faster, you can take a couple of those big fans (they come on stands), and remove them from the stands. Just place them face-d

      • I have a horrible sense of smell. The negative is that I miss many subtle flavorings in food, and find my likes and dislikes based more on texture than flavor. (It could also explain my prediliction with hot sauce!) The upside is that all the smells int he carpet which drove my wife nuts i miss compeltely. Couldn't smell it at all: w00t!
        • Hot sauces --- mmmmmm-mmmmmm!

I introduced my younger daughter to tabasco sauce on her eggs for breakfast a few years ago. She was skeptical at first ... now it's mandatory. It really adds to the experience.

Right now, I'm having vegetable soup with pepper and tabasco. There were a few people with runny noses at the office, and capsaicin seems to do the job of keeping the buggies at bay.

          • Hot peppers are like nature's perfect fruit. They are incredibly nutritious and good for you in just about every way; except for when the burnination gets to be a bit too much. If I have a good harvest this year I'll send you up a jar of my homemade Burning Halo hot sauce;-)

... better watch out that it doesn't trigger "terr'rist" alarms ;-0

    • Thanks for the thoughts on Zack, he is doing better at least.

The carpet looks awesome, and we are taking this time when everything is out of the common areas to re-think what all will be allowed back in, and what will simply need to be shipped off.

As for finding the person in history... I've often wondered about some of these things, especially food. Especially some of the more, exotic, foods. I can't think of a good example now, too little sleep, but there have been times when I've sat down to eat a

That's the hardest part. Lab/border collie mixes aren't exactly known for their calm, relaxed demeanor. Since his sister loves to run just as much as he does it makes it all the harder.
