Journal Red Warrior's Journal: Business Casual 15

The link below is in reference to Bush(43), but I'm not interested in politics[1] this time around. What caught my eye was the assertion that when you (the collective "you") need answers, you want to get them from the guy in the suit.

"Because of the seriousness of everything going on, he needs to put on a much more serious face. People are looking for answers and when you're looking for answers, you don't go to someone in a cowboy suit," said Toney.

Agree/Disagree? Why?
I personally tend to ignore people's clothes and determine if they sound credible.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

[1]OTOH, I'm not gonna stop those so inclined. ;->

  • Antione de St. Exupery had a very good point with his Turkish astronomer... In our western society, a lot of emphasis is placed upon fitting in. And there are cases where that's important. I work in a business environment. I wear suits to work. In theory, everyone is supposed to. In reality, some of the women wear clothing that's completely inappropriate. Part of the reason for the suits are to cut down on the distraction quotient. It's one thing for a woman- and i speak from experience as a woman who's mad
  • I think everyone these days takes work far too seriously, and it's why stress is so high, marriages are prone to break up, and midlife crisises are the norm. It's why vacations have to be cleared with employers months in advance, and why people are made to feel guilty that they had to bolt halfway across the state and miss work to go to the funeral of a parent. Personally, I'd rather be under a man who doesn't seem quite so solemn and cookie-cutter. Someone with eccentricities, with his own way of doing
  • I'll just refer to this JE [slashdot.org] on the subject of clothes. :-)
    • Damn, you beat me to that fine piece of writing. OTOH, it depends on the situation. If I've got a leaky faucet, I want answers from the guy with half his ass hanging out of his jeans.

  • If I already know from past experience that a person knows what they're talking about, I don't much care how they dress.

Beyond that, stereotypes may play a role in what you expect from who - looks like a computer geek? Expect to get good technical advice. Looks like a lawyer? Expect to get legal advice. Don't expect to get computer advice from a guy dressed like a lawyer, however.

As the BOFH says: Maintenance Contractors always dress up nice, with a tie and everything because they believe that a custo
  • I'm old enough to remember Jimmy Carter's sweater, which was clearly intended to send a message.

Remember Lamar Alexander's plaid shirt from the '96 campaign? This was regarded as a cynical ploy by many (including me). Anything a public figure does, or wears or says conveys a message, whether they want it to or not. It's all got to be carefuly considered. The same is true of us ordinary Joes, but not as amplified.

  • How one is perceived is how one is treated. Whether a person is attractive or not does not change the person, but it will change how people respond to the person. By dressing more formally, people will take you more seriously. Is it right? No. But it is as certain as taxes and death.

If someone is intelligent and well spoken, I'll listen to what they have to say regardless of what they're wearing. Unfortunately Bush has neither of those going for him...
  • *Where* did the JE go? If you're gonna post at 3:30 in the morning, you *gotta* leave it there for a little while!

Damn. I *knew* I shoudln'ta gone to sleep!

    ....Bethanie....
    • Dear Miss Bethanie,
I apologize most sincerely for having found it necessary to withdraw the above referenced essay for some major rework, so that it will comport with my high standards.

Seriously, let me just say in a roundabout fashion, I attended my Battalion training meeting last night. There were things discussed that are not at this time subject to public knowledge. The JE in question did NOT say any of those things. However, it arranged a number of freely available pieces of information in such a way
    • Oh, and I just read the feminazi arguement in SW's journal from back in June. Well argued. Correct, too.
