Submission + - Valve Releases Steam For Linux Client, Celebrates With Week-Long Sale

An anonymous reader writes: Valve on Thursday announced the release of its Steam for Linux client. You can download the client now for free from the Ubuntu Software Center. In typical Steam fashion, the company is celebrating the big day with a sale: over 50 Linux titles are now 50 percent to 75 percent off until 10:00AM PST on Wednesday, February 21. This means you have just under a week to take advantage, and should be plenty of time for Valve to set a new record in Steam for Linux downloads.

Lord of the Rings Online To Go Free-To-Play 138

darkwing_bmf sends word of Turbine's announcement that Lord of the Rings Online will become a free-to-play game this fall. 'The move is another validation of the free-to-play business model, where gamers can play for free and pay real money for virtual goods such as better weapons or decorative gear for their game characters. The business model has been popular in Asia but only recently took off in the US. This move shows the pressure is building on game publishers to shift to the new business model or face declining audiences.' According to a post on the official website, LotRO's micro-transaction system will be "very similar" to how Turbine's DDO store works, and current subscribers will maintain all of their privileges.

Facebook Master Password Was "Chuck Norris" 319

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "A Facebook employee has given a tell-all interview with some very interesting things about Facebook's internals. Especially interesting are all the things relating to Facebook privacy. Basically, you don't have any. Nearly everything you've ever done on the site is recorded into a database. While they fire employees for snooping, more than a few have done it. There's an internal system to let them log into anyone's profile, though they have to be able to defend their reason for doing so. And they used to have a master password that could log into any Facebook profile: 'Chuck Norris.' Bruce Schneier might be jealous of that one."

Wii Hardware Upgrade Won't Happen Soon 325

As high-definition graphics become more and more entrenched in this generation of game consoles, Nintendo has had to deal with constant speculation about a new version of the Wii that would increase its capabilities. Today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime bluntly denied that a hardware revision was imminent, saying, "We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it." He added, "In terms of what the future holds, we've gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home consoles will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability, and we'll do that when we've totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii. And we're nowhere near doing that yet."

Submission + - Mpeg2 Editing in Ubuntu Linux

Synchis writes: "I've just switched from Windows to Ubuntu Linux (hooray!), but one of my hobbies is video editing. Is there a frame-level mpeg2 video editing package for linux that is reasonably fast and easy to use? Also, I would love to know what is the best package for authoring DVD's in linux. If I could get these last 2 applications, I would forever be rid of Windows. :)"

Submission + - Windows Vista's Built-in Rootkit

iSeal writes: A new vulnerability in Windows Vista has been found, whereby malicious software are able to use the permissions structure in Vista to create what amounts to being a rootkit. By creating dummy account with certain permissions, the malware is able to make itself invisible to the detection of anti-virus/spyware products.
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Bed sharing 'drains men's brains'

Anonymous Coward writes: "Sharing a bed with someone could temporarily reduce your brain power — at least if you are a man — Austrian scientists suggest. When men spend the night with a bed mate their sleep is disturbed, whether they make love or not, and this impairs their mental ability the next day.
Tinfoil condoms anyone? Bed sharing 'drains men's brains'"

Submission + - Spaceport America Takes Off

SeaDour writes: "Spaceport America, being built north of Las Cruces, New Mexico, is finally becoming a reality and is set to become the world's first commercial spaceport. Governor Bill Richardson recently secured 33 million dollars from the state legislature for the final design, and a proposed 0.25% sales tax increase in Dona Ana County, where the facility is to be constructed, is expected to bring an additional 6.5 million dollars per year (if approved by voters next week). Richard Branson, the head of upstart Virgin Galactic, on Monday agreed to lease the facility for 27.5 million dollars over twenty years. If all continues to go as planned, SpaceShipTwo will make its first suborbital joy ride in two to three years."

Submission + - Finding Employee Numbers With Google

Voelspriet writes: "It's not without faults, hey its even not up to date, but its there. The new command employees in Google shows you the ..number of employees of a certain company. So now you know that Yahoo has more overhead then Google and Lenovo is still smaller then IBM. Wikipedia is the source. Some numbers are from 2004 or even older. There are a lot of omissions, so dont try to look up Slashdots owner OSTG or Indian Railways. I expect this to be one of a long range of new niche commands in Google."

Slowly and surely the unix crept up on the Nintendo user ...
