Speak for yourself, the first thing i thought when i read this was, "man now i have a really good reason to vactaion in Jordan!" Assuming you believe the stereotype (and actually Star Trek is famous for breaking this as apparent in the King) most trekies are more finacially secured on account of their higher than average education level (math, Science, ect.. affiliations) than say a construction worker et al.... Not that construction workers aren't star Trek fans, my family for example...

I love that somewhere there will be a Star Trek dedicated site of merit again. However, it will be interesting to see if the Political/Religous context of a Secular Humanist philosphy that is so paramount to the ST Universe will be downplayed on account that it is strictly speaking anathema to Islam (and most of the Big religions for that matter).

EDlll, I am going to go a head and completely agree with NeutronCowboy; this was a very entertaining and insightful post: Putting succinctly what i have felt and stated so many times before to friends, family, and anyone who would listen really. As i approach 30 however, and am a new father, I can't help but force myself to be optimistic about the eventual outcome of all-too-likely "Revolution" that we seem to be headed for. Yes our individual rights will be slowly eroded piecemeal one by one in favor of the privileged few. But (and this is the only shred of hope i am holding on to) there will come a time when American society will be so draconian, so in your-face biased, so "unfair", and so contrary to the original ideals this country was founded on that smart people such as yourself and the good people at /. (or whatever future incarnation like it) will organize enough to actually be effective in changing things. Your scenario evolving the junior Senator from Complete-Awesomeness is bound to fail. This system is set up so one person CAN'T make any kind of big shifts in culture. Thankfully so in my opinion. However, 543 people can (just asked Florida), or 271 people (electoral colleges you know the people whose election vote actually counts are depending on the state not LEGALLY mandated to vote for the populous winner in that state.) So yeah Senator Complete-Awesomeness or whatever will not, can not, should not be able to "fix" this problem, the same goes for the Presidential office. But you know who will? You, NeutronCowboy, me, Anonymous Cowards 1,2,and 3, and enough people running for office could. We Should. We, Almighty Control-Freak in the Sky willing, will someday. I just hope for my grandchildren's sake it's not too costly and bloody of a change.

While i appreciate the way you turned that question around, as far as i know the US doesn't lead the world in any of those anymore... Spam? Eastern Europe; Carbon Dioxide? Well actually thats now the People's Republic that produces the most.; warfare/weapons-selling? Someone correct me if i am wrong but isn't the AK-47 (Soviet/soviet knock-off) the most popular weapon in the world? And as far as Economic Imperialism...whats going on with Africa these days? who has the largest trade agreements and resource rights and futures invested in that continent again? Just sayin'.....

The ILOVEYOU Bug - Ten years on->

Submitted by Robotron23
Robotron23 writes "The BBC has a first-hand account of the ILOVEYOU e-mail virus from a worker at Star Labs who observed the phenomena as it happened. A decade ago, two students based in the Phillipines wrote the virus as a part of an undergraduate thesis; the virus was renowned less for its technical intricacy than its method of presentation which took advantage of human psychology. The virus itself cost firms millions in productivity losses, badly affecting businesses in Asia as well in Europe and the US. Server overloads, a lack of experience, and the absence of backups are cited as reasons for the severity of the e-mail infection — a fix was released quickly, but the magnitude of demand meant that initially it was available only to a fortunate few."
