ReactOS: Reverse Engineering for Profit?

Submitted by BobDoleForPrez
BobDoleForPrez writes "The ReactOS team is at it again. This time they are trying to sell their port of Windows as a learning platform in a recent talk given by the lead ReactOS developer.

ReactOS is possibly the most successful reverse engineering effort, with much of its code rolled into Wine and the Linux kernel. However, to date they have not been very successful at selling ReactOS itself.

In a recent essay, Finnish hacker, Bo Granlund, points out that for a reverse engineering enterprise to be successful, you need very smart people and a well defined target. Perhaps ReactOS could actually pull it off."

holden writes "NewsForge has an article on a recent talk given by Alex Ionescu (a lead ReactOS developer). He talks about the recent progress made with ReactOS, but he spends the majority of his talking about the technical details of the ReactOS kernel architecture. He also talks about some of the unique problems faced by trying to build a binary compatible kernel, looking at some of the difficulties with how some vendors such as nvidia optimize there drivers and how ReactOS presently handles them, as well as how they plan to in the future. His complete talk is available online in a number of different formats."

Andareed writes "Alex Ionescu, a lead developer of ReactOS (an open-source, source and binary compatible clone of Windows NT) recently gave a talk on the internals of ReactOS. In this talk, Ionescu also discusses how ReactOS is nearing complete kernel compatibility with Windows Server 2003. Interestingly, Ionescu hints that there are no plans for ReactOS once the kernel has been completed."
