Ummmm.... Shared means Public. There's already a public RSS feed for shared items in Google Reader, so these items were already being shared.

  Since Google really sets the standard for what is acceptable and unacceptable in webmail, switching to other providers is not a solution, since they are mostly, in my reading experience, worse when it comes to privacy. So what's your magic 'dont get it' so
