Journal Com2Kid's Journal: Dear Steve Jobs, please come Out of the Closet.. 37

I mean really, after the positively fruity OSX, not to mention the fruit named line of computers, come on will you? Admit it, you are gay. I mean it is OK, the computer community has traditional, well, not given much of a shit as to what a persons personal life is like.

But shoot, you head up a company selling computers best known for being named after fruits, have an OS that was obviously designed by Christopher Lowell and Rosie O'Donnel working together while on a bad acid trip, and the first and last professional stronghold of your plate form are, err, well, heh, artists.

I mean come on, how much gayer can you get?

Oh yah, and your OS performance sucks too.

Heh. You need HOW MUCH CPU horse power to do Antialiased text? Hehe.

Excuse me, your chooser fills up HOW much of the screen? LOL!

What is that? Unix in the background? Yah that's nice, if I wanted a Unix machine with piss poor performance and responsiveness that just shouts of a valium overdose I'd run a Gnome 2 desktop on a P266. Would give me about the same performance. Heh. I do believe the application base would be larger though. :P

Yah yah porting stuff to Darwin requires little if any work, blah blah blah so they got a buttload of command line utils. The GUI still sucks, but hey, if they drop to the CLI it isn't all so bad! Hehe. Kind of makes the entire fancy GUI thing worthless.

Don't even get me started on hardware pricing. I could darn well setup a PC _LAB_ for the price of a single high end Mac.

and when it comes to how high can you go. . . . well. . . . PCs just, err, hehe. Well;

Suck It Down Mac'y

Hmm, I wonder if any 4-way Xeon MoBos are made with AGP slots. . . .

Wow.. that was the worst rant I've everread. Guess you can't let the mac users have their machines and os's, and be happy with them.

I like mac os x. The gui works VERY well for me, and as a programmer, I really do use the command line for compiling and writing programs. And it really isn't a crappy OS. It requires a little more memory to run than OS 9, but that's ok. Memory is not as expensive.

Anyway, thought you may wanna know, you actually did step on someone's toes. :P

I just get sick and tired of the Mac users spouting out about how their OS "Is the best thing Since Sliced Bread(TM)"

Like it doesn't have bloat (err, and the first two releases of OSX would be called what now?) or that quality of code was not sacrificed for the sake of fancy UI effects. Bleck.

I HATE when instead of existing code being optimized, new code is added just to make something look fancier, YUCK.

It pisses off the base Nerd instinct of me of being EFFICIENT and getting work done FIRST and THEN worrying about appearance. /.'ers should be ashamed of themselves, isn't what being a Nerd/geek is all about is RESULTS over APPEARANCE.

I am mainly pissed off that OSX has themes support. It is a COMPLETE AND UTTER TOTAL WASTE OF CODE , as far as I am concerned, it boarders on digital blasphemy.

As if windows/linux/[your os here] users don't do the same? It's either pride or zealotry. Sometimes it's valid, sometimes it's not.

Actually, it has very little bloat. The only thing installed that I don't want is the AirPort drivers. But diskspace is cheap, and that half meg it might be taking is fine.

Freebsd/Mach have been proven stable. Is it so bad for Mac to dump it's old os for a new one? After all, MacOS 9 wasn't the most stable thing in the world. I've had it crash on this computer numerous times. I've only had OSX crash, what, twice over 2002?

Everything isn't so black and white. The asthetics of how things work really is important. The choice of colours and shapes of things (including fonts) and how they affect the eyes over time. The ease of use is VERY important, in terms of managing stuff. I like the fact I don't need to remember what letter my drive letter is (from the days of Dos) or what device name it is (under freebsd, for 4 years).

I am mainly pissed off that OSX has themes support. It is a COMPLETE AND UTTER TOTAL WASTE OF CODE , as far as I am concerned, it boarders on digital blasphemy.

Themes? Eh? The only thing close to themes it has is the changing of the background's of windows and the desktop. That and choosing between graphite and blue widget sets.

Besides, Microsoft does the same thing. They appeal to the PC market by trying to peg ease of use in their own fashion. It failed for me since 3.0 days. I've used OS/2, FreeBSD /w WindowMaker, KDE and MacOS. Mind you, they all have their faults, even MacOSX. They all aspire (I hope) to produce the best OS's (by their makers).

Would it be mature of me to start going off on how Windows is inferior because of their fruity green button and annoying start menu because users don't know where to begin? No. And I really don't believe it either. I do believe that MS can most certainly improve on their design, just as much as anyone else could. It just doesn't work for me and that's it.

One thing though, please do some research before you rant. Apple replaced the underlying OS because FreeBSD/Mach was proven rock solid, mac osx doesn't support themes and the asthetics of an OS really does matter. Sorta why the win3.11 design went away.
          • fruity green button

          You must mean XP

I feel the same way about XP that I do about OSX. :)
          • And just think: it's only going to get worse, as Windows gets more and more graphics frippery, and Microsoft obsoletes their operating systems in order to get you to continually upgrade.
              • And just think: it's only going to get worse, as Windows gets more and more graphics frippery, and Microsoft obsoletes their operating systems in order to get you to continually upgrade.

Indeed, and then you will hear me talking about how much XP/ZP and so on suckith, right along beside OS IX. :)
      • OSX has no themes support. Try running it once, maybe you'll actually make informed arguments.

OSX has themes available; but they're unsupported HACKS, not a supported feature. Apple specifically BREAKS theme support with each release. They specifically DON'T want themes, as themes were the #1 cause of headaches in OS9 and before.
          • OSX has no themes support. Try running it once, maybe you'll actually make informed arguments.

Then WTF is aqua? Just ugly?

You mean they actualy expect people to USE that thing?

          EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Ww w
          • OSX has no themes support

          *googles it*

Yeesh, why the hell do they call it the Aqua theme then? *sigh*

          ANNNYways

It STILL has support for round buttons, alpha blended, err, everything. (Win2K has Alpha Blending but it is not over used everywheres like it is in OSX) and bouncy jiggly, err, things.

Last time I tried to use a OSX machine I got bored after 2 or 3 days of the admin trying to install it on the iMac. Heh.
          • Sorry, try again. Aqua is not a theme.
            System Architecture Diagram [apple.com]

If there is a more authoritative source, please, let me know. I always (foolishly) assume Apple is the authority on their operating system.

Aqua is the name of the "front end" of the GUI (the back end being Quartz). The reason it's called a "theme" is because the elements can be replaced (they're just resource bundles).

Sorry, you're just misinformed. And the admin sounds like a moron. If you can't install an Apple OS on Apple hardware, then either 1)the hardware is badly damaged or 2)you're a complete fucking moron. I have yet to see an Apple OS install fail on working hardware, including network-based OS installs. Not once. Sorry, but this cat sounds like a fucking retard.
            • If you can't install an Apple OS on Apple hardware, then ... you're a complete fucking moron.

Agreed. I had no trouble installing OS X on my 3 year old iMac, excpet for a hard drive issue that was entirely my fault.
      • >I just get sick and tired of the Mac users spouting out about how their OS "Is the best thing Since Sliced Bread(TM)"

You know how much I bitch about OS X. I am critical of it in ways that make most of the Mac user population hate me.

That being said, I think it's better than XP any day. (Marginally better than W2k). XP gets great performance, but raising system requirements isn't a far way to do so.

There is bloat. Lots of it. Think about what they had to do for a second.
        1. Transition to an ENTIRELY NEW operating system
        2. Support YEARS of legacy stuff COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE with the new OS

So yeah, Finder has to understand both Unix AND OS9 semantics; it can't just ignore creator codes and old-style path separators, while it patiently waits for the Mac developer community to 1)learn Unix and 2)port their applications. As more and more developers move away from OS9 semantics, they can get rid of that crap. It's already happening. Can you IMAGINE what would happen if Microsoft released an OS that broke 100% of the installed base of applications? They never would, because there would be chaos. Apple had no choice. They did it in a year, too; OS9 is dead, thankfully. Smaller user base, yeah. But it's ballsy for ANYONE to try that, esp. a user base 5 minutes away from saying 'fuck it' and buying a Dell.

Also, re optimization: I have not bought a new computer, or even an upgrade to said computer, and OS X is WAY faster. I saw a presentation by an Apple guy, who said that they had to optimize the shit out of the OS because Motorola couldn't be trusted to deliver on the hardware. Try getting your facts straight.
          • So yeah, Finder has to understand both Unix AND OS9 semantics;

Windows currently is stuck working with what, 3 APIs?

(ok ok so granted that is MS's fault for having to do anything at LEAST three times before getting it right, heh)

          • it can't just ignore creator codes and old-style path separators, while it patiently waits for the Mac developer community to 1)learn Unix and 2)port their applications.

Windows is hardly any better off. There has been a kernal switch and a half since 95. (Dos/3.1 --> 9x is half a switch at best, heh, and then going to the current NT5.x kernal)

          • As more and more developers move away from OS9 semantics, they can get rid of that crap.

But the round buttons and PDF display system are still going to be there. Heck the support for COLORED buttons period. Yuck.

          • Can you IMAGINE what would happen if Microsoft released an OS that broke 100% of the installed base of applications?

Thankfully they transitioned into it and only managed to trash a few HDs (the EzCD creator 5 fiasco. ^_^ )

Actually after Windows 95 OSR1 most users would have been in FAVOR of an OS that broke backwards compatability. :) For that matter a CPU that did the same would be nice as well. . . . I wonder how much the register crud is hurting x86 performance. *sigh*

          • They did it in a year, too

A friend of mine had an x86 laptop running whatever MacOS beta it was that was ported to the x86 maaaaaaany years ago. Hehe I used to know its codename. (was it also Darwin? Too long ago to remember. :) )

          • Also, re optimization: I have not bought a new computer, or even an upgrade to said computer, and OS X is WAY faster.

About the speed it should have been when it was first released. . . .

          • I saw a presentation by an Apple guy, who said that they had to optimize the shit out of the OS because Motorola couldn't be trusted to deliver on the hardware. Try getting your facts straight.

When all the little pretty animations are gone and the buttons are nice and rectangular and proper, THEN I will consider OSX optimized. Until then it is just fugly.

Bleck, it is the Dock that has the bouncy things not Finder, Finder is the general Explorer equivilent.

(speaking of which, how easy is it for all ya mac users to do a complete interface replacement? *G* For Windows users it is just a single EXE, heh. Or rather a statement pointing to an exe)
          • I thought there was only the win32 api for Windows these days? Also, the switch didn't entail a new filesystem. fat32 was backwards compatible with fat16. The old Apple FS stored a lot more data than the FAT filesystems. It would be more like forcing users to change both FS and kernel, and API all at the same time.

            Still, what do I care?

And can someone please tell me once and for all why XP is so much worse than 2k? I just don't see it.
              • I thought there was only the win32 api for Windows these days?

Yes, but all the old crud still has to be supported. ^_^

              • was backwards compatible with fat16.

              Win2K supports FAT16, FAT32 (multiple variations, iiickes), NTFS4, and NTFS5.

That of course is nothing compared to any *nix distro. ^_^

WinXP sucks because basicaly it is Windows 2000 but it has been slowed down by the addition of excess pretty bits. Oh yah, and it also constantly tells the user "not to do that".

Ick. It has nothing over 2K except higher system requirements, heh. (and a few kernal optimizations to TRY and hide the added bloat, oh joy, bleck) It DOES boot up fast though. (it spends CPU idle time optimizing its boot order. LOL)
            • And can someone please tell me once and for all why XP is so much worse than 2k? I just don't see it.

It's not. People just like to complain about windows.
              • I can't back it up with anything beyond anecdotal evidence, but.. XP just feels wrong. There's something sinister about it. It's hard to explain.

Disclaimer: I liked W2k a whole hell of a lot. Paired with Object Desktop, it was nearly perfect. Then XP was declared the future, and W2k was consigned to "support it until we get everyone migrated to XP". At that point I decided that Microsoft had ignored my answer to their eternal question. I told them were I wanted to go today, and they replied that it was not an option.
          • >speaking of which, how easy is it for all ya mac users to do a complete interface replacement?

Finder is a single app. Window Server is a single app. The trick right now is that the back-end (SystemUIServer, etc) is undocumented, so implementing a new window manager is kind of a stab in the dark. Finder replacements exist though.
            • Does the OS have support for alternate shells built into it (in other words is it a boot time option that can be changed plain text?) or does it involve replacing the actual files with different versions?
  • Jobs did form NeXT and those were a real "man's" computer. Everything from the look to the operating system.

I'm going to look past the irony of you calling somebody else gay. Your comments about pathetic performance, etc are a little outdated. X.2 is fast, stable, and sexy like a fox.

I know were your coming from though when I first saw the aqua widget set I though eww. Now that it's grown on me. I look at win2K desktops and think how boring.

Now the Powermacs are a little ... Okay very overpriced under performing. But the laptops are way sexy. Me thinks you're just a wee bit jealous.

Don't hate me because my computer is cooler than yours. Look on the bright side you can get an ibook for just under a grand now. :P
  • My hope PC runs Object Desktop [stardock.com] on Windows 2000.

Does that mean I'm bisexual, or a transvestite?

My head hurts just thinking about it! :)
    • It depends. For awhile I had Object Desktop running and had various Anime characters on my desktop used to launch various different applications. I gave up on that after I found out how much of a pain in the arse doing animations in Object Desktop was. (uh BMP filmstrips? Yaaah riiiight, uh, no.)
      • Um, I'm not ready to take that step yet, at the moment I'm on just Windowsblinds and WindowFX. Got one of the iCandies as my wallpaper though. :)
  • Don't know exactly what your problem or point is with this JE, but flaiming someone with ignorant insults and straight-up bigoted comments is just unacceptable.

I've bitten my tongue at your comments in the past, but honestly you've crossed the line here.

If you don't like Macs or Mac code, then spew about that and not someone's sexuality.

Maybe next time I get upset at my Dell Server, I'll just blaim you and rip on your Latino heritage. Yeah... that seems fair.
      • If you don't like Macs or Mac code, then spew about that and not someone's sexuality.

Do you know what the word sarcasm is?

The dude names a line of computers after FRUITS

Calling that "ghey" is hardly an original joke. In fact I believe that has been done since the very begining.

Steve Jobs also aims his plateform at "artistic" types. yet another popular group for the gay jokes, as demonstrated in the movie As Good As It Gets.

Shit, it is an old joke and you STILL didn't get it!
      • Shit, it is an old joke and you STILL didn't get it!

        It's not a joke. It's ignorance.

To attack someone's sexuality is like attacking someone because of their skin colour; and I know for a fact you would be one of the first in line to flaim anyone who ripped on someone because of their skin colour.

          • and I know for a fact you would be one of the first in line to flaim anyone who ripped on someone because of their skin colour.

That all depends. If it is Michael Jackson, go for it.

Though you would have to determine color first. . . .

Michael Jackson dies his skin white he gets tons of jokes about trying to be white, Jobs releases a bunch of computers named after fruits, he gets tons of jokes about being a fruit.

Now quite frankly I have no objection to making lude/rude/unPC jokes just so long as they are made EVENLY and FAIRLY across all cultures.

          Thus, if I may;

Darn the blacks and their damn shitty ass rap so called "music." Damn drug dealin MoFos out to cap us all.

and screw the whites and their damn goth-punk teenie boppers who'll go around having sex with anything that has a hole in it and who'd like to blow out damn brains out anytime we tell their little smart allek asses no.

The Mexicans have some good music, but they are all too damn drunk to play any of it decently.

Not as bad as the Irish though, they are drunk AND too busy shooting each other.

Never wanting to hear camel farts, I have not listened to arabian music.

Jewish music is OK I guess, but all of their songs keep getting cut off after the first stanza.

Germans all sound like they are trying to cough something up. I am not just talking about their singing either.

          .
          .
          .

Sooo, annnyways. Anybody I haven't pissed off?

          No?

          GOOD

If you don't like me writing about steve job's secret homo-erotic life, wait awhile and I'll be writing about Bill Gates selling his daughter off to satan for a few extra percent market share.

See, I don't give a damn who I offend because they are all just words to me. They don't matter, and hell anybody who DOES place value on them needs to learn the meaning of content neutrality. Does it matter what a bunch fo electrons flying around the world end up arranging themselves as on your screen? Not really, if you don't care, heya bub, IT DOES NOT MATTER and that right there is one heck of a power you got. Your screen, your reaction, learn to deal with it.

Life is as life is, and its too damn short to get pissed off over what some foolio netizen (myself included) says over da net.

Now of course if somebody actualy does seriously get on somebody for the color of their skin, well then yah, I'll be right there to rip'em a new one. :)

I'm all for computer dating, but I wouldn't want one to marry my sister.

Working...
