Workarounds for Vista's Networking Problems? 153

Posted by Cliff
from the you-might-not-wanna-upgrade-just-yet dept.
tridium asks: "I recently moved into a new place where the landlord left a Linksys WRT54G v2 router for us to use. The three laptops in the house running XP connected to it fine, but my desktop, running Vista RC1 build 5600, had to be hardwired. The Internet worked fine for a bit, but I noticed some websites weren't loading up (Google, Gmail, and several others), and IM clients weren't working. Vista's self-diagnosis said it couldn't communicate with the DNS server, so I researched and it seems the new TCP stack in Vista is wreaking havoc with my router. I upgraded the firmware from Linksys, tried manually setting IP settings, modified the registry to disable TCP window stacking, but nothing helped. Linksys support was also useless in fixing the problem. I'm at a loss and any help, short of downgrading to XP, would be greatly appreciated." Other people have experienced problems getting Vista to work with off-the-shelf routers. A thread from September identifies the new window scaling feature as a potential culprit, while another article says that Vista and SPI-enabled routers don't play well together. Whether the problem is related is unknown, but another thread offers some troubleshooting tips for anyone else who may be experiencing this problem. Has anyone figured out how to disable (or at least work around) some of the more troubling aspects of Vista's new TCP 'features'?

Submitted by
robotsrule
robotsrule writes "The next version of Robosapien Dance Machine, the free open source program also known as Robodance, has support for the Nintendo Wii remote. A brand new video shows the upcoming release in action with a WowWee robot tickling Elmo. The video shows the creation of the script and how the Nintendo Wii remote smoothly interacts with the script. Also demonstrated is the use of voice commands to control a Roboreptile robot. Robodance requires a Windows PC and a supported infrared transmitter. It won the SourceForge Project Of The Month award for May 2005. The new version is expected to be released on February 1, 2007, or sooner."

Re-shipping scams skyrocketting

Submitted by sorry-scammed-loser
sorry-scammed-loser writes "A new online threat, reshipping fraud, is emerging in the form of a massive organized crime ring that is recruiting people in the US and Europe as "shipment handlers", and having them re-ship items to Russia. The criminals are using stolen Visa card details to pay for shipments from many large retail and auction sites (including ebay.com and amazon.com), and having the items shipped to their recruits who re-ship them to addresses they have been provided with. I personally lost a laptop this way that I had auctioned on ebay — I shipped the laptop after verifying that the funds had been deposited into my PayPal account, and two days later was contacted by PayPal who said that the account holder had not authorized the transaction. Now I have no money and no laptop. In my case, the scammers had recruited my re-shipper through an online job posting site, which pointed her to a legit-looking website called expertdelivery.biz that claims to operate offices in Minnesota and the UK (but is hosted in Belize). This reads like an episode of "24"... Please get the word out about this scam, at this point consumer education is the best protection against perpetuation of these scams."

The Games Industry's Biggest '07 Challenges

Submitted by Ground Glass
Ground Glass writes "Next Generation has taken a look at the recent history of the games industry (naturally including the fallout of the newly-birthed console war) and has come up with seven major challenges that must be solved in 2007. This includes some obvious things (avoiding major marketing mistakes like alliwantforchristmasisapsp.com) to hairy problems (how to encourage new intellectual property growth)."

I request a weekend in Havana with Phil Silvers!
