Journal BWJones's Journal: Matrix 4
O.K., so I know there are going to be a ton of journal entries on this topic, but here is my take on this film after seeing it today.
1) There were 25 minutes of previews we had to sit through which sorta threw my scheduling off as I had to get back to the lab.
2) Reloaded kinda sucked.
3) The audience sucked. I consider myself very much a geek and I don't want to appear elitist, but there is nothing sadder than a full-on geek affect without any intelligence to back it up. Arguing perspectives on which sci-fi character could kick whose ass is just pathetic. Particularly from anyone older than 14. That combined with idiots IM'ing each other with their cell phones from all corners of the theatre left me rather irritated.
4) What was up with all of the obsession with sex and what was that whole dancing scene in Zion about? Don't get me wrong, I 'm all for a little sexual tension, but it all appeared awkward and kinda silly, especially the digital orgasm via the chocolate decadance. I guess it simply struck me as purile, and I expected more intelligent humor.
5) The dialogue left me for the most part flat as this movie had very little of the clever phrasing and interaction that the first one had. I mean, "You think that's air your breathing?" was a pretty good line and the first movie was full of good stuff like that. Lack of adequate dialogue leaves me caring little for the protagonists, and in fact, it was Agent Smith that had most of the good lines.
6) O.K., now that I got all that complaining out of the way, I will say that the freeway chase scene was spectacular and if my wife would have let me, there would be a Ducati 996 sitting in my garage as we speak, even if they are $20k.
7) While some of the animation was pretty weak, there were a couple parts that pre-sage the coming of the all digital actor. This I am sure will save the studios many hundreds of millions in the long run. The main hyped fight scene is what I am talking about and it was cool, but went on far too long. I got the point.
8) Some pretty cool shades in the film as well. This movie is going to do some serious marketing driven product promotion, even if some of the brands are pretty weak. However, you gotta love the cossack that Neo wears.
All in all, am I glad I saw it? Yeah, but simply to stay current on some aspect of pop culture and I don't think I will be getting the DVD.
Product Placement? (Score:2)
If you noticed, I'd like to know.

Absolutely. Let's see, there was certainly Cadillac (yuck) being used for two prominent vehicles, a Heinekin(sp?) beer sign (I prefer microbrews), I believe Ray-Ban? sunglasses which were on everyone, but I am not sure there. (Oakley is my preference there). Ducati was certainly represented in the freeway chase scene (but that's O.K. with me).
I believe there were a couple of others that are slipping my mind right now, but they were there.
reloaded (Score:2)
As for reloaded, I thought most of the zion scenes could have been left out. It was very, star-wars-episode-one-senator-palpatine-jedi-coun c il-ish and the speech to zion I felt was just silly. I would have been content, if Neo and Trinity's love scene consisted of them waking up in the ship like they did prior to arriving in zion. There
DVD might not be so bad (Score:2)
My reasoning for this is, on the big screen, the CG looked really bad. Like watching my brother play some video game. But this was watching polygons on a giant screen. I'm betting it will look _much_ better on a smaller screen, where it is much harder to see the obvious polygonalness of the objects.
So, th
