+ - Weather Channel Buys Wunderground, Storm Warning!->

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "The NYTimes writes, "In the eyes of Weather Underground’s ardent fans, the Weather Channel appears to represent the wrong kind of weather information: personality-driven sunniness and hype, they say, rather than the pure science of data. "

"It happens all the time"

“Something great gets invented and sold in the United States, and it gets bought up and destroyed.”

To illustrate the shock and anger, it is as if it was just announced that Microsoft's Balmer bought the biggest Open Source software provider and turned it into a Microsoft subsidiary to eliminate competition."

+ - Samsung says no to 7 inch Android tablets!-> 1

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "Feb. 14, 2011 — All sorts of interesting information is coming out of MWC lately, and one tidbit came in concerning Samsung'sGalaxy Tab.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 will not be a 7-inch device

Samsung’s language was apparently quite strong saying, “7-inch device could not be considered a tablet”. This part of the market could be covered by larger phones 4.3-inches+ and smaller slates.

Samsung is sticking with their guns and not calling 7-inch devices tablets."

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "This update is a solid one, and shows that the Windows Phone team is doing what Apple and Google are already doing: quick, small iterations in the OS to bring rapid improvements, instead of the monolithic juggernaut approach of desktop

Windows. It looks pretty good. Hopefully — with the help of Nokia — maybe people will actually start to buy the phones.

I noticed the free developer tools from Microsoft were already updated over a month ago. The Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express package is pretty easy and fun to use, even for Noobs to programming."

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "When Hosni Mubarak shut down Egypt's internet and cellphone communications, it seemed that all U.S. officials could do was ask him politely to change his mind.
But the American military does have a second set of options, if it ever wants to force connectivity on a country against its ruler's wishes.
There's just one wrinkle. "It could be considered an act of war,"

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "Feb. 5, 2011 — What looks like a contraption out of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Skin-cell Gun is more like an airbrush gun that holds healthy stem cells that were donated from a burn victim’s own healthy skin. Using the device, these healthy stem cells are sprayed onto the burned area of a patient’s body and what happens next is truly amazing. Instead of a burn wound that normally takes weeks to heal, the same wound can be cured in as little as a few days."

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "A jaw-dropping 54 percent of VZW's Android and BlackBerry users say they're either very likely or somewhat likely to buy the iPhone.

It took all of 17 hours or so for the initial allocation of pre-order Verizon iPhones to get churned through, meaning there won't be any more orders placed until 3:01 AM ET on February 9 (online orders) or 7 AM local time on 2/10 (store purchases)."

+ - Wed Angry Birds expansion expolits Android Flaws->

Submitted by 4phun
4phun (822581) writes "ZoomWednesday a proof-of-concept app was uploaded and made available on the Android Market that took advantage of two serious flaws recently discovered in the Android OS.

Disguised as an Angry Birds expansion, the app silently installed three additional apps without the need for user authorization. The hidden apps also had the ability to gain access to the user's phone contacts, location information and SMS functionality. They could also transmit the data to a remote server. Do you have any idea how many turkeys actually fell for it?"
