Don't know what you are talking about.
Houston is beautiful. The weather is always nice. The airports are in the east part of the city away from major traffic.
There is NO smog, just great horned owls that eat all the rodents.
There is no state tax.
Some of the best restaurants in the country are here.
Just close enough to the ocean to enjoy but no so close to be encumbered
No earthquakes, fracking or otherwise
No crazy insane laws, Just common sense (yes they believe abortion is murder thats statewide) Example: No LGBT discrimination in city jobs and Transgender can use the bathroom of their turning gender not current one.
We have NASA
We have green jobs
We have oil industry jobs
we have IT jobs
So far the only bad things are Comcast, no IN and Out and homelessness is a crime

Comment Re: sorry, all my laptop batteries are dead (Score 1) 143

So I have to ask, why do you think that a CRTs Flyback transformer has the same amount of juice in it as a basic laptop battery.
A quote from wikipedia to drive the point home:

A flyback transformer and its associated circuitry operate at very high voltages at low currents ( far beyond mains voltage. While most flybacks do not supply enough power to kill directly, the voltage they employ can cause violent muscle spasms if touched; and such spasms usually cause injury. A common injury that occurs when one is shocked is actually to be injured not as much by the shock itself, but when the victim's hand or arm is thrown back against other internal components in the display device. Therefore, only trained persons should touch or modify these devices, after first ensuring that the transformer is switched off and any stored energy has been safely discharged. The CRT attached to the flyback has an inherent capacitance which can hold a high voltage charge for more than a week after the power is switched off.

So your ignorance about electricity then means overly cautious now. Don't be.

Is Hughes a visionary cleaning out dead wood or a clueless tech star leaving destruction in his wake?

Both. He's clueless because he doesn't understand who buys the New Republic. He's a visionary because NP does have a lot of dead wood. The truest example of who Hughes is: On Season 3 episode 4 of the Newsroom Lucas Pruit buys ACN after it is spun off from its parent company Atlantic Media in an effort to save Atlantic Media from greedy asshole cousins who were given shares in their uncle's will that would allow them to take over the company to...sell it to someone who only wants its IP assets. Hughes is Lucas Pruitt who announces his vision of bring ACN into the 21st century by intoducting crowdsourcing media, instagram and twitter links etc. Everything that Charlie Skinner hates.
