Comment Only the incompetent need the media to inform them (Score 1) 64

A lot of people have no business being in charge of the security of a server. Those are the same people who need the media to bring an exploit to their attention. They might fix Heartbleed but they never fix CVE-2014-wxyz and others and their server is probably already compromised or could be anyway. Some of the hackers will help keep your system up to date, since they don't want some other hacker taking one of "their" servers.

I found Heartbleed very simplistic and how it went unnoticed for so long is impressive. Why the hell did it let you specify the number of characters to send back and never check that? https://xkcd.com/1354/

Exactly. I was thinking the same thing. Most the images looked virtually identical, but the main image where the PC showed more detail I just see jpeg artifacts as you said. I looked up at the URL and saw .JPG and thought.... wow you went through all this trouble to show which was better and you ruined your visuals by using JPG when PNG was right there probably one drop down box away when you were saving the images.. At this rate I am not sure if they save the screen shots in JPG then put them together in say Adobe Photoshop then saved them in JPG yet again..

Submission + - Groceries Delivered, With a Side of Guilt Over Good Jobs 1

curtwoodward writes: Getting your groceries delivered isn't exactly a new idea. But in many large U.S. cities, it's never been easier, with tech companies of all sizes competing for dollars from time-strapped shoppers. After trying out two versions of online delivery services, this reviewer was left feeling they were pretty equivalent — but also had some serious worries about whether the people doing the work had good jobs, or were being exploited in the "independent contractor" economy.

Submission + - Microsoft losing the schools to iPads and Chromebooks

dkatana writes: Microsoft licensing scheme, high cost of support and difficult management of devices are the key factors making schools drop Windows for better alternatives as iPads and Chromebooks.

Google is making a dent on education with Chromebooks. The internet giant has been promoting the use of Chrome OS with specific tools for schools to manage the devices, their apps and users. Its Chromebooks for Education program is helping schools deploy large numbers of devices with an easy management system.

While Google is successful with Chromebooks as school laptops the clear winner on tablets is Apple. iPads are a the preferred platform for schools deploying tablets as digital learning devices.

Speaking for workstations/desktops: Every business I know or dealt with has no plans to go to Windows 8.x, ever. They all buy desktops that might come with Windows 8 but they just get imaged to Windows 7. Most of them lagged getting away from XP and they just now got to 7. My best guess is Windows 10 will be the successor after it comes out and proves to be stable and usable as a desktop OS.

I heard one tech recently say something about how we should upgrade to Window 8 and it pretty much made me laugh. Why would we? By the time we finished rolling out Windows 8 and working out the kinks Windows 10 would be out, our Windows 7 is stable and will be supported for many more years.
