New MacBook Case Leak Rumors 243

Someone noted that there are more macbook case leaks which look to all but confirm a new MacBook and possibly a MacBook Pro expected to be announced for later this week. There seem to be fewer ports, and no leaks of a 17" aircraft carrier laptop.

Submission + - "bob's game" MASSIVE nintendo DS game by o (youtube.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: I'm surprised this isn't on Slashdot already! Check out this HUGE Nintendo DS homebrew, a retail quality adventure game created entirely by a 25 year old independent developer. Robert Pelloni says he's spent 15,000 hours on it over 5 years, starting on the GBA in 2003. The dedication put into the project really shows, this is pretty amazing! The main page is at http://www.bobsgame.com/ where he sums it up himself "It's the game I wanted to play when I was younger, a vision I've been following since then."

Submission + - Who thinks Firehose software is working right? 6

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "I find the Firehose software to be infuriating. It seems to have no 'stickiness' but constantly reverts to other views and searches than what I was looking at. I'm about ready to give up on it unless they tell me they recognize it's dumb and are doing something to make it work right. Am I the only one who feels this way?"

Submission + - Red scientology tomato rotting in Firehose? (slashdot.org) 1

An anonymous reader writes: A posting to the Slashdot Firehose related to a Wikinews story on Wikileaks and legal threats from Scientology, seems to be stuck in the Slashdot firehose red as a ripe tomato for more than 24 hours.
The story that covers a recent press release on Wikileaks relating to copyright claims made by the Church's legal representatives towards the published "Operating Thetan" cult manual, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in scam money, already spawned a hot discussion on the Wikinews portal. With critics of cult-critics trying to shut the story down for hours, it finally went online. And now seems stuck in the Firehose. One can only hope not for the wrong reasons.

Submission + - UK may U-turn and back OOXML (zdnet.co.uk) 1

superglaze writes: "An unnamed source has claimed that the UK could be set to back OOXML, despite previously voting against Microsoft's format. It seems that the technical group advising the British Standards Institution is now backing OOXML, with IBM, unsurprisingly, being the sole hold-out. Still, even if the UK says yes, it looks like the format will fail the ISO fasttrack process."

Submission + - Church of Scientology violates Federal Law (rapidshare.com) 5

FreedomToThink writes: "This is a very long story I'm sure the editors will have fun with, but I couldn't see how to cut it down at all.

On the eve of the Ides of March protest, from the source of the recent 'Anonymous' submitted CCHR leak on wikileaks, comes this message

"Dear $cientology,You attempt injunctions.I respond.Shall we continue the game? Much Love, DEEP CLAM"

Included was yet another PDF this time including yet more emails leaked from a Church of Scientology front group.

Lunch with your preferred Presidential candidates for a high price?

ONE SEAT LEFT

I have arranged a private one-hour luncheon with Ron Paul on 11/28 in St.
Pete when he will be in town for the CNN/YouTube Republican debate.

This luncheon is reserved for $1000+ donors to Ron Paul's presidential
campaign. 19 people so far have paid and confirmed and will have the honor
and pleasure of having lunch and communicating with Ron Paul directly.

From the head of the "Non Proffit" CCHR Bruce Wiseman

Go the the HELP committee website. The link is here.
http://help.senate.gov/About.html
Here you will see the names of the Committee members on the left hand
side
of the page. Please go to the individual websites of the Republican =
members
(this will take just a bit of leg work on your part by putting their =
name
into Google) and calling their office or sending a fax to them (email is =
the
least effective) stating your opposition to S. 1375 The Mother's Act.

Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

An OCMB (Operation Clambake Message Board)regular adds :

I downloaded myself a copy and started looking through them. I found an interesting one on pages 47-48.
http://rapidshare.com/files/99292051/CCHRLeak3.pdf.html

Karin Pouw of OSA of CofS writes a message.
It's forwarded by Michael Genung. He's the guy who runs ACSR, Association for Citizens Sociel Reform. http://www.citizensforsocialreform.org/ ["CSR Background and Philosopy: CSR was founded in 2001 by a group of Scientologists and other like-minded individuals concerned with the escalating social ills in society. CSR's purpose is to work with in the field of public policy to bring about more effective and humane solutions to these social ills of illiteracy, criminality substance abuse and general decay of character."]

Then it's forwarded by Doyle Mills, of LEAF fame (Letters to the Editor Attack Force).
Then it's forwarded by Mary C. (possibly one of two Mary C's I'm thinking of, but unsure).
Then it's forwarded by Mike Kaplan, another person who runs an email list and forwards CCHR type stuff to CofS members.

If that ain't stringing a line from the CofS to CCHR and the CofS front group ("grassroots") movements, then I don't know what is!

Apologies in advance as the Enturbulation servers will not be up to a slashdotting so the Coral Cache link is here Enturbulation Discussion (already cached for you)

ANYONE CAN REPORT TAX FRAUD DIRECTLY TO THE IRS : http://www.irs.gov/compliance/enforcement/article/0,,id=106778,00.html It does require that you print out and mail in an actual hardcopy, but it does not require you to identify yourself.

Just a casual user passing on a message from the Enturbulation forum, this is already out there, there's no reason to attack the messenger."

Submission + - Mac, BSD prone to decade old attacks 7

BSDer writes: An Israeli security researcher published a paper few hours ago, detailing attacks against Mac, OpenBSD and other BSD-style operating systems. The attacks, says Amit Klein from Trusteer enable DNS cache poisoning, IP level traffic analysis, host detection, O/S fingerprinting and in some cases even TCP blind data injection. The irony is that OpenBSD boasted their protection mechanism against those exact attacks when a similar attack against the BIND DNS server was disclosed by the same researcher mid 2007. It seems now that OpenBSD may need to revisit their code and their statements. According to the researcher, another affected party, Apple, refused to commit to any fix timelines. It would be interesting to see their reaction now that this paper is public.

Submission + - Ray tracing for gaming explored (pcper.com) 3

Vigile writes: "Ray tracing is still thought of as the 'holy grail' for real-time imagery but because of the intense amount of calculations required it has been plagued with long frame render times. This might soon change, at least according to an article from Daniel Pohl, a researcher at Intel. With upcoming many-core processors like Intel's Larrabee he believes that real-time ray tracing for games is much closer than originally thought thanks in large part to the efficiency it allows with spatial partitioning and reflections when compared to current rasterization techniques. Titles like Valve's Portal are analyzed to see how they could benefit from ray tracing technology and the article on PC Perspective concludes with the difficulties combing the two rendering techniques as well as a video of the technology in action."

Submission + - SPAM: Computer glitch fouls driver's license services

coondoggie writes: "An ongoing computer network glitch caused many states to stop issuing driver's licenses and other identification cards today. The problem could persist through tomorrow. At the heart of the problem sources said is a server or servers running at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) location. AAMVA is an information clearinghouse for all states, offering access to motor vehicle administration, law enforcement and highway safety information. All states access federal databases through the AAMVA server. According to the AAMVA a server began slowing down at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and required the shut down of DMV services in Ohio, and North Carolina to help ease the problem. The server issue affects all 50 states however, reports said. [spam URL stripped]"

Submission + - Your Beliefs versus the Facts (yahoo.com) 1

lucabrasi999 writes: Professor Thomas W. Martin of Arizona State University has an interesting article in the Chritian Science Monitor and was picked up by Yahoo. The basis of the article is that despite all of the evidence to the contrary, many of his students still prefer to believe in creationism over the evolution. This leads him to question why there are people who refuse to consider the opposing point of view. Even in science, there are scientists that fight publication of opposition articles, because they don't believe in them. Professor Martin's main point is, what would it take for people to realize that being 'wrong' on an issue is not necessarily a bad thing, but is part of the way we all become more intelligent. Learning, by it's very nature, means that we must be taught when our opinions are incorrect and we must learn to accept the fact that our individual views are not always correct.

Submission + - Dell 22" Crystal Display LCD Launched (hothardware.com) 2

MojoKid writes: "Last year at CES in Las Vegas, Dell previewed a "concept" monitor that definitely pegged geek-o-meters in the industry with its ultra-sleek, clear, tempered glass design and super-thin, clean profile. Back then not much was known about this 22" panel that popped out of nowhere, nor did we get a sense for when or even if the product would actually see the light of day on the open market. Now, just a few days before CES 2008, Dell announces the 22" Crystal Display series, with its 4mm premium grade ultra-clear tempered glass bezel and zinc alloy tripod stand. The new LCD will have a 2ms pixel response time, 98% color gamut performance and a 2000:1 contrast ratio."
