Comment MIT both undereacts and overeacts (Score 1) 416

As a MIT grad it mystifies me sometimes. A cyncial point of view might say "follow the money" and perhaps there is a 7-figure lawsuit in the background. MIT ignored a cluster of alcohol-related deaths and suicides, then paid a $6M settlement to one family. They should have reacted stronger to when the DA threw the book at Aaron Schwartz with an order-of-magnitude larger threatened penalty than average hacker case.

Comment Bezos handling the Washington Post better (Score 1) 346

I heard a talk from the Washington Post managing editor at Denver University last month. Like the New Republic, Bezos is pushing hard for an "all media" platform. But the WP workers sounded happier, probably becuase Jeff is also pouring money into it and hiring instead of firing.

Comment warehouse retrevial jobs were dificult, low paying (Score 1) 110

Running across concrete all day in minimally air conditioned buildings and under the uncaring eye of the computer clock for not much more than minimum wage. I read several exposee articles in the past few years about this. Unons and liberal governments were about to crack down on difficult considitons. And now they may not need to. Some things are better left to machines.

Comment solar cell rotator largest failure so far? (Score 2) 236

If the solar cells dont optimize the solar incidence angle, the power could be cut in third. Power is kind of tight on ISS now, In the mid-2000s a shuttle mission replaced a broken bearing wheel on half of the solar cells. It would be much slower to replace such now without the shuttle.
