Submission + - Tata Set to Launch World's Cheapest Car

theodp writes: "Ready for one-automobile-per-child (OAPC)? India's giant Tata Group is on the verge of launching the world's cheapest car. The People's Car, slated to be unveiled January 10th at a New Delhi auto show, will carry a sticker price of 100,000 rupees ($2,500), which some analysts say could revolutionize automobile costs worldwide. The cheap car, a pet project of Cornell-trained architect Ratan Tata that he helped design, is aimed at improving driving safety by getting India's masses off their motorbikes and into cars."

Journal SPAM: Digital Astrophotography - Review

In the 80's there were a series of commercials for Reeses Peanut Butter Cups that revolved around the theme of accidental meetings between chocolate and peanut butter. The individuals would realize that the two tastes that they loved separately were even better together. Two great loves for many card carrying geeks are digital photography and astronomy. "

Submission + - Nintendo Wii Fully Hacked at 24C3, runs Homebrew (wiinintendo.net)

cHALiTO writes: "From the site:
The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native Wii homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)
They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. Using these keys, they were able to create a Wii 'game' that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).
Read here and watch video here."

Submission + - New Jersey bans sex offenders from using internet

the_humeister writes: According to the AP, New Jersey has just enacted a new law restricting internet access to sex offenders. Now this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing save for the fact that "sex offender" now covers such a wide range of actions such that getting caught urinating in public can get you such a label.

Submission + - Tens of Thousands of Adult Website Accounts Hacked (www.icwt.us) 3

Keith writes: "Tens of thousands — or maybe more — accounts to adult websites were recently declared compromised and apparently have been that way since sometime in October, 2007. The issue occurred when the NATS software used to track and manage sales and affiliate revenues was accessed by an intruder, who apparently discovered a list of admin passwords residing on an unsecured office server at Too Much Media, which makes and maintains NATS installations for adult companies. It would appear that Too Much Media knew of the exploit back in October, and rather than fixing the issue tried to bury it by threatening to sue anyone in the adult industry who talked about it."

Submission + - Email in the 18th century 2

morphovar writes: More than 200 years ago it was already possible to send messages throughout Europe and America at the speed of an aeroplane — wireless and without need for electricity. The optical telegraph network consisted of a chain of towers, each placed 5 to 20 kilometres apart from each other. Every tower had a telegrapher, looking through a telescope at the previous tower in the chain. If the semaphore on that tower was put into a certain position, the telegrapher copied that symbol on his own tower. A message could be transmitted from Amsterdam to Venice in one hour's time. A few years before, a messenger on a horse would have needed at least a month's time to do the same.

Submission + - Nanosolar ships first $1/watt panels (nanosolar.com)

ThreeGigs writes: "After five years of development and $100 million in funding, solar panel maker Nanosolar has begun shipping their $1.00 per watt panels. At those prices, solar power cheaper than coal has finally become a reality. The bad news? The next 18 months worth of production from their 600,000 square foot facility are already sold. Still, it's a revolution in the making."

Submission + - How to Write Alternate History (associatedcontent.com)

MarkWhittington writes: "Alternate history, or as historians sometimes like to refer to it, counter factual fiction, is a sub genre of science fiction that tells a story set in a universe in which history proceeded on a different course. Lots of people like to read alternate history. Lots of people aspire to write it. There are, however, certain rules and guidelines one should follow if one is to write alternate history successfully. These go beyond the usual stuff about plot, characterization, and description."

Submission + - No Right to Privacy When Your Computer Is Repaired (zdnet.com) 3

Billosaur writes: "ZDNet's Police Blotter bring us the interesting story of a Pennsylvania man who brought his computer into Circuit City to have a DVD burner installed on his computer and wound up being arrested for having child pornography on his hard drive. Circuit City employees discovered the child pornography while perusing Kenneth Sodomsky's hard drive for files to test the burner, then proceeded to call the police, who arrested Sodomsky and confiscated the computer. Sodomsky's lawyer argued in court that the Circuit City techs had no right to go rifling through the hard drive, and the trial court agreed, but prosecutors appealed and the appeals court overturned the lower court's decision, based on the fact that Sodomsky had consented to the installation of the DVD drive and the techs "weren't randomly perusing the drive for contraband, but instead were testing its functioning in a 'commercially accepted manner.'""

Submission + - Duke Nukem Forver teaser trailer to be released

mattgoldey writes: "From 3DRealms.com...

Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.

After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, around noon CST, we will release the first teaser trailer from Duke Nukem Forever. To tide you over until then, there has been a screen shot taken from the teaser and posted in our forums. Check it out here.

Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience.

We'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John).

UPDATE: Here is an update that George Broussard made online this evening:

        Guys just to manage expectations...

This is a teaser. It's not a full blown trailer like the 2001 trailer (but something like that is coming). I tried to be clear about that in the message board post, so just bear in mind that it's a teaser :)

        Enjoy."

Submission + - Duke Nukem Forever. Is Forever Finally Over? (fastsilicon.com)

mrneutron2003 writes: " George Broussard and the crew at 3DRealms have released a "teaser" screenshot , and promised to release a "teaser" mini-trailer of Duke Nukem Forever today at around 12:00 CST. Duke Nukem Forever itself has almost become legendary in the gaming community, or perhaps more like the industries longest standing joke, having been "in development" for 10 years . The screenshot they provided on their forum looks quite good. Let's hope the trailer is equally exciting and more to the point, that this wasn't some Christmas Party joke prompted by too much Egg Nog.
