Submission + - Is iOS 8 a pig? (trustedreviews.com)

kyjellyfish writes: This submission is more of an "Ask Slashdot" question than a scoop, and is not intended to denigrate pigs. I've been using iOS 8 for several days and aside from a few gimmicks and add-ons that attempt to achieve parity with Android, my experience has been overwhelmingly unsatisfactory. My chief complaint is that the vast majority of my apps are slow to boot and noticeably sluggish in operation. I want to point out that all of these apps have been "upgraded" specifically for iOS 8 compatibility. Previous operating system upgrades have been relatively seamless, so I'm asking whether other slashdotters have experienced this degraded performance.

Comment Becuse it is small (Score 1) 264

The iPhone 6 comes with 1 Gb of memory. And has options for 16, 64 and 128 Gb of storage.
Why does this even get published?

Because 16GB it is considered useless with todays ever growing Application, Photo and Video sizes...and ironically OS Sizes. Even. National newspapers are discussing it http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sci...

Comment Comparing Apples with Apples (Score 1) 264

That's about right. I just checked my iPhone (4s), and in over two years of use, never cleaning anything, I've barely passed 5GB. By far the biggest use of space is recorded videos, followed by photos, then several big apps.

And it is not a good comparison. Photos and Videos take up more space on a phone because the cameras now are higher resolution, even though they are still tiny compared to the opposition, and Apps are growing exponentially I have several Apps that are GBs. I know Apple does not have as many Apps as Android, but I would find it astonishing if it were not the same.

With its tiny resolution cameras you don't need a lot of storage. It is only 8MP the selfie cam is an astonishingly small 1.2. I agree though mobile devices should advise space free not total amount. In this case iOS 8 takes up 5GB of that space so should advertise itself as a 11GB phone

Ignoring the usual America centric hire purchase model that makes the me too iphone acceptable in America with a market share there of 40% yet 10% everywhere else when you have to pay $800 vs $200.

The me too iPhone is underspecced in every way; Not just storage but ram, screen resolution, both camera resolutions (The front is a disgrace), and still on only two cores. It does not even compete with phones costing half the price a year ago. Yet it still lacks features such as IR Blaster, Waterproofing...or even a radio.

The fact that it still has no removable battery...or more importantly to this apologists topic the removable sdcard on a me too phone with tiny resolution is a disgrace.

Submission + - Apple's 'Warrant Canary' Has Died

HughPickens.com writes: When Apple published its first Transparency Report on government activity in late 2013, the document contained an important footnote that stated: “Apple has never received an order under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act. We would expect to challenge such an order if served on us.” Now Jeff John Roberts writes at Gigaom that Apple’s warrant canary has disappeared. A review of the company’s last two Transparency Reports, covering the second half of 2013 and the first six months of 2014, shows that the “canary” language is no longer there suggesting that Apple is now part of FISA or PRISM proceedings.

Warrant canaries are a tool used by companies and publishers to signify to their users that, so far, they have not been subject to a given type of law enforcement request such as a secret subpoena. If the canary disappears, then it is likely the situation has changed — and the company has been subject to such request. This may also give some insight into Apple's recent decision to rework its latest encryption in a way that makes it almost impossible for the company to turn over data from most iPhones or iPads to police.

Submission + - Apple Glosses Over Vulnerabilities Patched in iOS 8, Snubs Security Researcher (zdziarski.com) 1

PainMeds writes: At this year's HOPE conference, security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski discussed his findings (slides) of a number of iOS vulnerabilities which made national news. Apple quickly addressed the issues in iOS 8 Beta 5, and Zdziarski explained the fixes in detail. Now that iOS 8 has been officially released, the security release notes appear to avoid mentioning the vulnerabilities that were addressed altogether, except for an out-of-place mention of some "diagnostics changes" in a note at the very bottom, and fail to give any credit to the researcher for finding the problems. Zdziarski has published an open letter to Tim Cook and Apple's Security Team highlighting this:
"I am very glad to see that Apple has taken security seriously enough lately to address vulnerabilities quickly, and – from what I’ve seen – elegantly. I’ve even written up a paper praising Apple for their quick and thorough response to these issues. ... What I’m not glad about at all is that Apple has seemingly swept these issues under the rug, to the degree that they’re not even acknowledged in your security notes. Apple’s code fixes can be clearly observed right in the iOS 8 firmware, and yet there is not a single mention of them in the release notes, nor any acknowledgments for the researcher. If there is any ethical practice to be expected in information security – or science of any kind for that matter – it is to properly acknowledge those who’s research you’ve consumed. In many settings, failure to do so is considered plagiarism." ... "there has been no mention of the more serious issues being fixed, or ever existing." ... "Not one mention of file relay, wireless lockdown vulnerabilities, packet sniffer access control vulnerabilities, or backup encryption bypass vulnerabilities."

Submission + - Android One's price/performance ratio proves to be inferior! (digitimes.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: Slashdot carried the news about the launch of 3 Android One cellphones in India

The truth is, the price / performance ratio of any of the three phones listed was actually ***INFERIOR*** to the entry level smartphones that are on sale in China

For example, in China, consumers are now able to buy a smartphone equipped with a 5-inch display, a 13-megapixel camera and a MediaTek 8-core CPU for US$100. Compare that to the Dream UNO Mi-498, the Android One smartphone from Spice, India, which has a 4.5-inch display, MediaTek 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, 5-megapixel camera, with a price tag of INR7,000, or US$115

If the Chinese smartphone makers can outdo Google in the game, what is the point of Google continuing pushing its Android One phones?

Submission + - Gamergate may impact the 4th quarter sales of consoles (digitimes.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: Slashdot had a report on the Gamergate — http://slashdot.org/index2.pl?... — but that report is a political correct and sanitized version of what has been going on

The truth is much messier than what has been portrayed

Gamers are getting very angry of being accused by the industry, the feminists, the bloggers and the politically correct media of being sexist, racist, misogynistic and the way they have been treated by many online sites, including a blatant and heavy handed silencing pogrom by reddit

The politically correct media, including BBC, has widely circulated the story of a female blogger threatened but conveniently omitting stories of others who have been similarly threatened — just because they were not of the female gender — in their exercise to portray the gamers as misogynistic, bas backfired

The 4th quarter sales of game consoles is traditionally the most important quarter as most parents would make the purchase for their children — but as this outrage goes on, and sparks fly, parents may opt to buy tablets for their kids instead
