Submission + - Linux-based, open source audio and lighting platform to hit market (kickstarter.com)

dheera writes: Boston-based startup Belleds has launched a crowdfunding campaign to build a Linux/OpenWRT-based home audio and lighting solution.

Besides using this to make your next dance party more awesome, in a vast sea of closed-source home automation hardware with varying implementations and standards, it's great to finally see some open source hardware hitting the markets which will truly let us realize a more well-integrated smart home of the future.

Submission + - Brisbane hits coldest temperature in 103 years (theaustralian.com.au)

schwit1 writes: If you are lucky enough to be reading this from the comfort of your blankets, it might be best to stay there, as Brisbane has hit its coldest temperatures in 103 years.

Not since July 28 1911 has Brisbane felt this cold, getting down to a brisk 2.6C at 6.41am.

At 7am, it inched up to 3.3C.

Matt Bass, meteorologist from BOM, said the region was well below our average temperatures.

“If it felt cold, that’s because it was, breaking that record is pretty phenomenal for Brisbane,” Bass said.

“The average for this time of year is 12C, so Brisbane was about 9C below average, it is pretty impressive really, to have the coldest morning in 103 years is a big record.”

The coldest place across the state was Oakey which got down to -6.1C, which was the coldest temperature for the town since 2011.

— Snowden made the world a better place
— He has had neither good or bad impact
— He unnecessarily tampered with things
— The world became a worse place by his actions
— What Snowden has done is very wrong
— I have not been following the matter

Well, we'll see. People here have long lists of requirements that "would make them buy a smartwatch", and the lists even include things that are far away from reach of current technology.

In reality, all it requires is some marketing.

Add a Bitcoin app and show a short video clip Linus Torvalds says that "yeah, smartwatches are quite interesting area where Linux is used". Make it so that you can unlock the watch and SSH to it and do stuff. The nerds will arrive.

I want a smartwatch, that looks and feels exactly like my current watch (Casio WVA-470 with Titanium bracelet), but has notification features over bluetooth etc. Batterylife must be over 2 months with single charge and use solar and/or wrist movement for charging. Also the time needs to be synced automatically, through RF-waves atomclock or with the help of the mobilephone.

We should be shooting for 1 week battery life for now, as the battery is small and it's running Android. I know you want 2 months but it most likely is not possible at least for a long time. Your other requirements do not seem unreasonable though.
