Submission + - Edge 2008: What did you change your mind about? (edge.org)

chrisd writes: "The Edge 2008 question (with answers) is in, and it is "What did you change your mind about and why?". This year features answers from scientists as diverse as Richard Dawkins, Simon Baron-Cohen, George Church, David Brin, J. Craig Venter and the Astronomer Royal, Lord Martin Rees, among others. Very interesting to read. For instance, Stewart Brand writes that he now realizes that "Good old stuff sucks" and Sam Harris has decided that "Mother Nature is Not Our Friend". I hate to pander, but what did /. readers change their minds about in '07?"

Submission + - 57 mpg? That's so 20 years ago 6

maclizard writes: "I wish my car got 57 miles to the gallon.

From the article:
'The CRX HF got an Environmental Protection Agency-estimated 57 mpg gallon in highway driving. Today, the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Civic you can buy gets an EPA-estimated 34 mpg on the highway. Even today's Honda Civic Hybrid can't match it, achieving EPA-estimated highway mileage of just 45 mpg. The Toyota Prius, today's fuel mileage champ, gets 46 mpg on the highway.'"

Submission + - Make your own Star Wars mashup

An anonymous reader writes: Time has a listing of top websites, one of interest is a Star Wars mashup page where you can make your own Star Wars movie. The site provides more than 300 video clips, audio tracks and photos from George Lucas' originals for you to recut, rearrange and remix as you wish. You can even throw in your own video footage or stills, then post the results for others to watch or even to incorporate in their own mashup. Registered viewers can leave comments and give ratings. The site aims to be suitable for children, so any offensive material will be taken down. There are clips featuring all your favorite characters (Luke, Han, Chewy) and there's Leia, the armed princess in white choir robe and ear buns, and Leia as Jabba The Hut's prisoner, sporting that golden two-piece. Billie Dee Williams (a.k.a. Lando) plays host and tour guide. The easy, drag-and-drop editing tools are provided by Eyespot, which runs its own video-mixing site.

CEO of Red Hat Steps Down 153

bearer_of_bad_news points us to a C|net article which states that Matthew Szulik is stepping down as the president and chief executive of Red Hat. Szulik is citing family health reasons, and he plans to remain chairman of the board. Red Hat has indicated that his replacement will be former Delta Airlines COO James Whitehurst. Quoting the article: "On a conference call, Szulik said Whitehurst stood 'head and shoulders' above other candidates interviewed in a recruiting process. He was a programmer earlier in his career and runs four versions of Linux at home." We discussed Szulik's ascension to CEO back in 1999.

Submission + - NSA buys out secure mail services, anti-virus (cryptome.org)

An anonymous reader writes: A source to Cryptome alleges that, "Certain privacy/full session SSL email hosting services have been purchased/changed operational control by NSA and affiliates within the past few months, through private intermediary entities." Hushmail, Safe-mail, Guardster are each named.

With regard to anti-virus software it is alleged that, "Zone Alarm, Symantec, MacAfee: All facilitate Microsoft's NSA-controlled remote admin access via IP/TCP ports 1024 through 1030; ie will allow access without security flag. Unknown whether or not software port forward routing by these same programs will defeat NSA access."

Mars

Submission + - Asteroid to hit Mars ?

mbone writes: "Apparently the Near Earth Object (NEO) program has found an asteroid that may impact Mars on January 30th. The current probability is one in 75, which is pretty high a month out. Estimated energy release if it does impact Mars is in the multiple megaton range.

If it does hit Mars, then we should have quite a show, with all of the spacecraft orbiting and landed on the planet. Of course, it is possible that this is an old, failed, spacecraft from decades ago, which would also be interesting, if not as spectacular."

Journal Journal: Open Source Gamer Guide to Free Games

In writing a series of Open Source Gaming articles, it's easy to leave out a lot of peoples favorites. In order to combat this, I am taking all suggestions for the Next four installments. I play each game and give a short overview.

Upcoming articles up are:
Part 5. FPS (Preferably not already covered in Part 1)
Part 6. Turn Based Strategy, I especially need help here, as it is my least favorite genre.
Part 7. RPG including MMO types
