No project should ever be a democracy, it is plain nonsense...

Discuss about ideas, propose things, whatever... But a clear guidance and leadership takes you to the end...

Submission + - 10 Most Useless Firefox Extensions

CorinneI writes: "There's a lot to add on to Mozilla's popular browser; some of it's really useful, and the rest of it not so much. Last month, 10 of the most useless and ridiculous extensions were named; this month, there are 10 more. What's special now, though, is that this week Mozilla Technology Strategist (and "Add-ons Guru") Mike Shaver named the top 5, including a Mood Map and a PacMan clone. Sure, you may not use them, but they're a riot just the same."

Submission + - Why outsourcing is fading away

operator_root2 writes: This article on outsourcing to India details several reasons as to why the outsourcing boom is no longer turning attractive. The main reasons being cited are 'puffed up projections by consultants', 'high rates of attrition and low productivity', and 'operational problems'. The article further notes that most companies are predicted to go slow on expansion plans and eventually exit. Further more, the article notes that some other locations are emerging as outsourcing centres. ""Russia is where India was a few years ago. At that time, Indians worked harder, for more hours, and at low salaries. Today, Indians think they can command any price."

Using Java 3-D technology in a "holodeck", the simulation has 3000 body parts that can be explored to show the effects of medication on organs over time. It can also be used for surgery simulations. Submission + - Holocaust Dropped From UK Schools

dteichman2 writes: "It appears that UK schools are ignoring The Holocaust. A government-backed study, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, found that some teachers are reluctant to teach history lessons on The Holocaust for fear of offending Muslim students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial. As such, many schools are not covering the subject. Additionally, similar problems are being met with lessons on The Crusades because these lessons contradict teachings from local mosques.

Isn't there a law that requires UK schools to cover these topics? Should there be?"

Is Computer Science Dead? 641

warm sushi writes "An academic at the British Computing Society asks, Is computer science dead? Citing falling student enrollments and improved technology, British academic Neil McBride claims that off-the-shelf solutions are removing much of the demand for high-level development skills: 'As commercial software products have matured, it no longer makes sense for organizations to develop software from scratch. Accounting packages, enterprise resource packages, customer relationship management systems are the order of the day: stable, well-proven and easily available.' Is that quote laughable? Or has the software development industry stabilized to an off-the-self commodity?"

Submission + - HDMI Enabled Graphics Cards Debut

TrackinYeti writes: "HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), is the first industry supported digital-only interface, that requires a single cable to connect an output source to an HD-ready device, such as a television or monitor and deliver HD video, plus multi-channel digital audio, like Dolby Digital and DTS. Recently, Asus Computer released versions of their GeForce 7600 and Radeon X1600 cards with HDMI outputs on them, driven by an on-board Sil1930 controller. These are some of the first graphics cards to hit the market that can output HDMI natively with an integrated HDCP cipher engine and support HD-audio as well. Just the thing for that HTPC?"

But to the skeptics, such as myself, I believe it's going to prove difficult at best. Why the harsh outlook? Because this has been part of the Microsoft domain for so long that I don't believe that IT managers are ready to make the leap of faith that Google needs to kick start things with. Then again, Google could be closer than I initially thought..."

LNXPhreak writes: "OSWeekly.com has an outlook on various media center applications that are available for Linux. Hey, everyone or anyone I'm trying to track down an old, old computer game. I'm not sure if it was for apple or PC but I think it was PC. It's called Fairy Tales, but it's not like mother goose fairy tales. You started off as one of three brothers, when you died as one brother, you would become the one of the other brothers. Submission + - why exercise boosts brainpower

aditi writes: CNN reports that exercise boosts brainpower by building new brain cells in a brain region linked with memory and memory loss.
Tests on mice showed they grew new brain cells in a brain region called the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus that is known to be affected in the age-related memory decline that begins around age 30 for most humans.Researchers used magnetic resonance imaging scans to help document the process in mice — and then used MRIs to look at the brains of people before and after exercise. They found the same patterns, which suggests that people also grow new brain cells when they exercise.
