The main reasons being cited are 'puffed up projections by consultants', 'high rates of attrition and low productivity', and 'operational problems'. The article further notes that most companies are predicted to go slow on expansion plans and eventually exit. Further more, the article notes that some other locations are emerging as outsourcing centres. ""Russia is where India was a few years ago. At that time, Indians worked harder, for more hours, and at low salaries. Today, Indians think they can command any price."

MitsuMirage writes: Researchers at the University of Calgary have unveiled the CAVEman, a virtual anatomically-correct human male, as reported in the Globe and Mail. Using Java 3-D technology in a "holodeck", the simulation has 3000 body parts that can be explored to show the effects of medication on organs over time. It can also be used for surgery simulations. Slashdotters rejoice, a female version is in the works.

This years highlights include Chris DiBona (Google), Alan Cox, Nat Friedman (Novell), Aaron Seigo (KDE), Christian Schaller (Fluendo) and Michael Sparks (BBC) among the speakers (full list here) and Ubuntu, Novell, O'Reilly, Senokian and MythTV among the exhibitors (full list here). In addition there will be Birds of a Feather sessions, lightning talks, and, of course, lots of beer drinking.

This is the premier community event in the UK, with over 500 attendees from all over the world last year, and at only £5 a ticket for a 2-day event it isn't to be missed."

A government-backed study, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, found that some teachers are reluctant to teach history lessons on The Holocaust for fear of offending Muslim students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial. As such, many schools are not covering the subject. Additionally, similar problems are being met with lessons on The Crusades because these lessons contradict teachings from local mosques.

Isn't there a law that requires UK schools to cover these topics? Should there be?"

Citing falling student enrollments and improved technology, British academic Neil McBride claims that off-the-shelf solutions are removing much of the demand for high-level development skills: 'As commercial software products have matured, it no longer makes sense for organizations to develop software from scratch. Accounting packages, enterprise resource packages, customer relationship management systems are the order of the day: stable, well-proven and easily available.' Is that quote laughable? Or has the software development industry stabilized to an off-the-self commodity?"

aditi writes: CNN reports that exercise boosts brainpower by building new brain cells in a brain region linked with memory and memory loss.
Tests on mice showed they grew new brain cells in a brain region called the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus that is known to be affected in the age-related memory decline that begins around age 30 for most humans.Researchers used magnetic resonance imaging scans to help document the process in mice — and then used MRIs to look at the brains of people before and after exercise.They found the same patterns, which suggests that people also grow new brain cells when they exercise.
