Comment BurstNET (Score 1) 375

I use BurstNET as my VPS provider. I have one VPS with 1 GB of RAM ($9.95 per month) and two with 512 MB of RAM ($5.95 per month). I've had no major issues over the past 6 months, just two minor slowdowns caused by another VPS client on the same node abusing resources (both times, the person was using their VPS as a seedbox). In both cases, the abusive users were removed in less than one hour. They are completely unmanaged/self-managed of course. Meaning that except in cases of hardware failure or network connectivity issues, you're on your own. Just like all other unmanaged VPS providers.

Submission + - Webcam on school-issued laptop spies on students (cnn.com)

jersey_emt writes: A high-school student claims he was disciplined at school for "improper behavior". But his alleged transgression did not occur on school grounds. It happened in his home.

The student's parents have filed a lawsuit against the Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania claiming that school officials unlawfully activated the laptop's webcam, spying on their son in their own home.

That would be Pro "Choice". For the most part this is limited to while the infant is still inside the mother's womb, but there are some who support "abortions" within the first 6 months after the infant as left the womb.

When it is still inside the mother's womb, it is not an infant, it is a fetus.

And most abortions are performed during the 1st trimester. 88.2% of all abortions performed in the United States in 2003 were at 12 weeks or before. 10.4% were performed between 13 and 20 weeks, and only 1.4% were performed at 21 weeks or later. Also, most late-term abortions are only performed when continuing the pregnancy presents a dire risk to the woman's life.

I'm sure there are some people who truly support "abortions" within the first 6 months after birth. But this would be such an extreme minority that stating this in the way you have only makes you look like a fool.

Pro-choice != Pro-abortion. I am pro-choice, but also believe that abortions should be discouraged. It should be a choice of last resort, and it should definitely not be used as a form of birth control. But having the choice available for those situations where it truly is in the best interest of everyone involved is of paramount importance. Most people who are pro-choice would agree with these views.

Because a single serving (a cup) of coffee IS actually 5 or 6 ounces.

We've just been trained to think that a 'small' drink is 32 ounces, that a 1/4 pound beef patty is a 'small' burger, etc.

Hell, the smallest size coffee at Starbucks is 8 ounces, a 'short' -- which isn't even on the menu (you have to ask for it specifically).

Persistence Pays Off With Israel's First Windows Refund 84

As Niv Lilian reports at Ynet News, Haifa (and the Haifa Linux Club)'s Zvi Devir just preferred to run Linux rather than the pre-installed Windows on his newly bought Dell computer, and didn't want to pay for the unwanted Windows system. Now Devir has prevailed, after a fight in Israeli small-claims court, to become the first Israeli to obtain a Windows refund (also in Hebrew), winning the $137 that Windows added to the cost of his machine and escaping the nondisclosure agreement that Dell had wanted him to abide by as a condition. Perhaps others will follow his lead. Update: 12/03 23:02 GMT by T : Zvi Devir wrote with an update: "BTW, the settlement was out of court, before any court sessions took place."

"It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule," he writes. "Not bad considering I'm looking at it like it's a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft."

Submission + - How much are ad servers slowing down the internet? 2

vipermac writes: Most the times I have a problem with a web page loading slow (or freezing temporarily), I look down at the status bar and see that it is waiting on an ad server, google analytics, or the like. It seems to me on popular web sites the bottle neck is overwhelmingly on the ad servers now and not on the servers of the main web site itself. In my opinion it seems we need a better model for serving ads or else these services need to add more servers/bandwidth. Are there any studies on the delay that 3rd party ad servers are creating, or any new models that are being introduced to serve ads?

Submission + - AllofMp3.com owner acquitted, faces expenses (cnn.com)

Christopher Blanc writes: "A Russian court found the former boss of music download Web site www.allofmp3.com not guilty of breaching copyright on Wednesday in a case considered a crucial test of Russia's commitment to fighting piracy. This implies Russia has a different view of copyright/IP than the West with its longer tradition of capitalism.
