Real Reason Why the White iPhone 4 Is Delayed 182

tekgoblin writes "There have been numerous reasons why the White iPhone 4 may be delayed with one reason being the color mismatch between the home button and the body. Well this time there is another reason. A source has told CultofMac that the reason for the delay is a light leakage issue caused by the case being clear. Light from the case leaks into pictures taken by the back and front camera on the white iPhone 4, causing distorted pictures. This problem is non-existent on the black iPhone 4, because of its already black case, so Apple has been looking for a solution to this problem, thus the delay of the White iPhone 4 till spring of next year."

UK Police Force Posts All Its Calls On Twitter 66

Stoobalou writes "One of the largest police forces in the UK is posting every incident reported to it today on Twitter. Greater Manchester Police began its 24-hour experiment this morning at 05:00 BST, tweeting all incident reports in the hope of highlighting the complexity of modern policing. 'Policing is often seen in very simple terms, with cops chasing robbers and locking them up,' Chief Constable Peter Fahy said in a statement. 'However the reality is that this accounts for only part of the work they have to deal with.'"

Doctors Save Premature Baby Using Sandwich Bag 246

Born 14 weeks early, Lexi Lacey owes her life to some MacGyver inspired doctors and a sandwich bag. Lexi was so small at birth that even the tiniest insulating jacket was too big, but she fit into a plastic sandwich bag nicely. ''The doctors told us they had never known a baby born as prematurely as Lexi survive. She was so tiny the only thing they had to keep her body temperature warm was a sandwich bag from the hospital canteen — it's incredible to think that saved her life," says her mom.

Comment degrees get you past HR...$40k for that? (Score 1) 438

There is a big difference between does the degree help you get jobs and does it do anything to make you a whole person. I don't have a degree and was lucky to be able to work my way up in a very large company so HR never got to look at my resume. However if you wanted my job today HR wouldn't let you past to get interviewed without a degree and a decade of experience. No one on my team that had a degree has one in Computer Science or anything like it, when we interview people with them they seem to lack all the real world knowledge that we need and end up just getting the guy with experience instead. My point here is that experience is far more important to your ability to do that job than any degree could ever be. So what degree's really do is get you past HR. If we as a people could come up with better ways to asses someones talents maybe we could get HR departments to stop sucking so bad.

Today's Children Are Officially Potty Mouths 449

tetrahedrassface writes "When the Sociolinguistics Symposium met earlier this month swearing scholar Timothy Jay revealed that an increase in child swearing is directly related to an increase in adult swearing. It seems that vulgarity is increasing as pop culture continues to popularize vulgarities. The blame lies with media, public figures, politicians, but mostly ourselves. From the article: 'Children as young as two are now dropping f-bombs, with researchers reporting that more kids are using profanity — and at earlier ages — than has been recorded in at least three decades.'"

Woman Wins Libel Suit By Suing Wrong Website 323

An anonymous reader writes "It appears that Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader Sarah Jones and her lawyer were so upset by a comment on the site TheDirty.com that they missed the 'y' at the end of the name. Instead, they sued the owner of TheDirt.com, whose owner didn't respond to the lawsuit. The end result was a judge awarding $11 million, in part because of the failure to respond. Now, both the owners of TheDirty.com and TheDirt.com are complaining that they're being wrongfully written about in the press — one for not having had any content about Sarah Jones but being told it needs to pay $11 million, and the other for having the content and having the press say it lost a lawsuit, even though no lawsuit was ever actually filed against it."

Girls Bugged Teachers' Staff Room 227

A pair of enterprising Swedish schoolgirls ended up in court after they were caught bugging their teachers break room. The duo hoped they would hear discussions about upcoming tests and school work, allowing them to get better grades. It worked until one of them decided to brag about it on Facebook, and the authorities were called in. The girls were charged with trespassing and fined 2,000 kronor ($270) each in Stockholm District Court.

I am not going to say that no one is ever misdiagnosed but I think that economic models used here are not always the best predictors for medical issues and that studies like this have been used for years to try to cut funding for special education in public schools. It is honestly not that hard to tell the difference between an immature or young kid and one that has ADHD if you have some expertise with ADHD and I suspect if proper diagnoses was allowed by HMOs and PPOs there would be little problem. Having pretty bad dyslexia meant that I went to private school for kids with learning disabilities that did not effect ID (e.g. dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADD and ADHD) and I have got to tell you that the idea that the ADHD and ADD kids don't have an issue other than just being immature is insulting, a gross misunderstanding of the problem, and something kids with learning disabilities have had to fight with for years.

EVE Player Loses $1,200 Worth of Game Time In-Game 620

An anonymous reader writes "Massively.com has reported that an EVE Online player recently lost over $1,200 worth of in-game items during a pirate attack. The player in question was carrying 74 PLEX in their ship's cargo hold — in-game 'Pilot's License Extensions' that award 30 days of EVE Online time when used on your account. When the ship was blown up by another player, all 74 PLEX were destroyed in the resulting blast, costing $1,200 worth of damage, or over 6 years of EVE subscription time, however you prefer to count it. It has more problems than a elevated train system, while using all the resources of a surface light rail system. They have taken the worst of both and put them together into one of the worst public transport system ideas I have ever seen.

Why You Never Ask the Designers For a Favor 238

Usually there is nothing funny about a missing pet, but the tale of Missy the lost cat is hilarious. It serves as an example of just how clueless your fellow employees can be, and why you should never ask the designers to drop what they're doing, and help with a personal matter.

I could muddle through many of the tasks but why would you do that when I can look it up, get it done faster and have a higher chance of success? I think you really hit the nail on the head with this testing people in isolation thing. It doesn't tell you anything about how well they work in groups, how quickly they can get through reference material (I would suggest that looking it up is my sharpest skill), thus not really telling you anything about problem solving in the real world. Testing doesn't show you anything, the worst engineers I have ever worked with had a list of certs as long as my arm. The best ones didn't have a cert or degree or anything.
