About six years ago, the Royal Shakespeare Company presented a performance of Edward III and attributed it to Shakespeare. It's accepted that Shakespeare didn't write every word of every plays in his canon (for example, he didn't write most of Pericles and Henry VIII) but there was obviously enough evidence for most Shakespeare scholars to accept that he wrote a substantial part of it. This latest piece of research is just a further piece of evidence, but it's nothing radically new.

Submission + - UK Conservatives slammed over open source stance (techworld.com)

Golygydd Max writes: The UK government has been criticised by the opposition Conservative (Tory) party for its lack of support for open-source software. Now, according to Techworld, a security company that has examined the Tory plans, has come out against the use of open source software, citing the number of security problems inherent in the software. This is a sensitive issue for the UK government, still smarting from the loss of 7m family records from HM Revenue and Customs in 2007.
What makes this criticism interesting is that this is an attack on the policies of what will certainly be the next British government — it's unusual for a party to be criticised like this before it comes to office. It's an indication of how IT is going to be a battleground in the future general election.

It's not true to say that every area covered by cable is also covered by DSL - at least not in the UK it's not. I have a cable connection to my house but DSL is not an option as I'm too far from the exchange (about 70m according to BT). And yes, I do have a cap on my broadband but as I never some near to reaching it, I'm not bothered. I am far more bothered by the lack of competiton though, there's now only one cable operator in the UK and if Virgin decides to hike its prices, I have little choice when it comes to broadband

Submission + - Blade vendors in discussion on common format

Golygydd Max writes: "Blade server vendors are locked in talks on developing a common blade format according to Techworld. HP and IBM are staying schtum on the matter — hardly surprising seeing that it would be their market leadership screwed up. However, such discussions would certainly make sense to Fujitsu Siemens and Sun; I wonder why HP and IBM wouldn't deny it though."
Red Hat Software

Submission + - Red Hat gets heavy over Novell code

Golygydd Max writes: "Accusations on open source continue to fly thick and fast. This time it's Red Hat vice president Scott Crenshaw who's getting narked. Techworld reports that Crenshaw has accused Novell of including Red Hat code in the company's SLERT launch last week. Crenshaw made his accusation, however, just as Red Hat was launching its own version of real-time Linux."
