According to Cloud Pro, a new group, The Open Cloud Initiative, is attempting to fill the vacuum and start promoting open standards in the cloud community"

+ - Pfizer in massive $1.6b Wyeth IT integration spend->

DMandPenfold writes "Pfizer has spent $1.6bn on system integration around its mammoth acquisition of rival Wyeth two years ago, including on a global enterprise resource planning rollout.

The pharmaceutical giant said yesterday it has spent the money over 2009 and 2010, “primarily” on system integration and consulting costs.

A large part of the work is understood to concern a global SAP rollout. Pfizer reportedly made a strategic decision to move to a centralised SAP enterprise resource planning platform in 2009, following the Wyeth acquisition. Wyeth had already begun a transition to SAP ERP globally, having moved from multiple instances of JD Edwards"

DMandPenfold writes "The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had been clearly foreseeable on its monitoring systems, but those systems lacked proper alarms to alert tired engineers..

That is a final verdict of the US Oil Spill Commission, tasked by president Barack Obama with investigating the disaster. In its report published today, it blamed serious errors and cost-cutting decisions by BP and lead partners Transocean and Halliburton, and called for an industry and regulatory overhaul to prevent future accidents."

DMandPenfold writes "The London Stock Exchange’s delayed Linux-based trading system has finally been given a go-live date of 14 February, for the exchange’s main cash markets.

The launch date announcement comes as the LSE put the highly-publicised December outage of the system — which already runs on its Turquoise anonymous trading venue — down to “human error”. It declined to give more details."

Intellectual Ventures was founded by Microsoft, Intel and a Seattle based lawfim."

ChiefMonkeyGrinder writes "Cloud adoption could help the UK achieve economic benefits of £100.7 billion over the six-year period from 2010 to 2015, according to a study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR). Cloud could also create thousands of new jobs, says CEBR. In the UK, 289,000 jobs are expected to be generated cumulatively over the 2010 to 2015 period, contributing to the more than 2.3 million jobs that are expected to be created across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. The net annual figure for all five economies is forecast to be 446,000 new jobs."

He will appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court later. Assange is accused by the Swedish authorities of sexually assaulting two women. He has said the charges are wrong and are part of a campaign against him as Wikileaks reveals a raft of confidential government communications."
