James Hardine writes: The New York Times and The Inquirer are reporting that Wikileaks, the transparency group that published two manuals leaked from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba earlier this month has now caught US armed forces personnel there conducting propaganda attacks over the Internet. The activities uncovered by Wikileaks include deleting Guantanamo detainees' ID numbers from Wikipedia, posting of self-praising comments on news websites in response to negative articles, promoting pro-Guantanamo stories on the Internet news focus website Digg, and even altering Wikipedia's entry on Cuban President Fidel Castro to describe him as "an admitted transexual". Guantanamo spokesman Lt. Col. Bush blasted Wikileaks for identifying one "mass communications officer" by name, who has since received death threats for "simply doing his job — posting positive comments on the Internet about Gitmo". In response Wikileaks has posted independent confirmation of their analysis by security expert Bruce Schneier.

Smoke2Joints writes: The latest EVE patch is a big expansion of the game, introducing new environments, missions, ships, an overhauled graphics engine supporting DX10 effects, deleting your system boot.ini file, numerous bugfi- hold on, what? Apparently they have withdrawn graphics update patch because a vast crowd of people have been unable to boot up again after applying the patch. Vista is apparently unaffected, but XP users and below have had a nasty present left for them. Official statement here. Nice work guys.

An anonymous reader writes: CCP's new trinity patch for EVE Online has an option to upgrade to "premium graphics." However, the patching file that upgrades the game to premium graphics deletes the user's boot.ini file from the partition the game is installed in. For the less technically inclined (not the slashdot readership, but whatever) this makes the computer unable to boot up after restarting.

An anonymous reader writes: The recent EVE Online expansion, Trinity, appears to have an unbelievably nasty bug that makes one question whether the publisher, CCP, has any QA at all; a typo in the patch results in C:\boot.ini being deleted. The patcher adds an extra backslash onto a delete command for "boot.ini" resulting in "\boot.ini", which if the game is installed on C: refers to Windows' boot.ini file. Hundreds of players have reported their computers being unable to boot, and tens of thousands more will likely encounter the same problem when they attempt to turn on their computer tomorrow. Oops?

Nobo writes: CCP's latest major patch to the EVE-Online client, Trinity, comes with an optional DX9-enhanced graphics patch which dramatically improves the visual quality of the in-game graphics through remade models, textures, and HDR. It also has an unfortunate bug. Due to the incredibly stupid choice of boot.ini as a game configuration file, coupled with an errant extra backslash in the installer configuration, anyone who installs the enhanced graphics patch overwrites the windows XP c:\boot.ini file with the EVE client configuration file, bricking the machine on the next boot. Discussion on the forums is becoming understandably heated.

Chuu writes: "Today EVE Online launched a major expansion named 'Trinity' which included a major engine overhaul. The problem is that because of a bug in the install script, the graphics add-on deletes the system's boot.ini file which renders the system unbootable. There is no official word from CCP about this yet, however many large alliances in game and individuals in the official forums have confirmed the bug. Some discussion about the bug and what to do if effected is here."

frozenphil writes: CCP, the makers of Eve Online, released their "Trinity" graphics engine patch today for Eve Online. The patch has deleted several users' boot.ini file. Apparently quality control procedures are different in Iceland than the rest of the world. This seems to only affect those using the upgrade patch and not those doing a full install.

I haven't been able to find any suitable automated DJing systems for Linux, where I can queue up some songs to be played with an automated detection of the end of each song and hopefully some rudimentary beatmatching. When challenged to use GNOME for a month, he submitted patches to the GNOME project to prove his criticism is *constructive*, saying "The code is actually _cleaner_ after my patches, and the end result is more capable. We'll see what happens". However, he still didn't commit to actually using GNOME.

An anonymous reader writes: Despite the two recent Slashdot articles about Larry Sanger's Citizendium, it appears that the site is having difficulty converting good publicity into new content. Although the project saw impressive spikes in the number of new user registrations on both occasions, neither of them resulted in a general increase in the number of edits made to the site; even the number of article edits for the last 24 hours are lower than pre-Slashdot levels. What does this mean for the budding Wikipedia competitor?

An anonymous reader writes: This may be a statement of the bleeding obvious but I have only just realised it.
I was recently dealing with Linux Tech Toys as the shopfront for Lix Systems, ordered a system and paid my money. They answered my emails up until 3 weeks ago. Since then nothing. Emails to both sites go unanswered. Phones calls can't go to voice mail because the voice mailbox is full. They are unreachable.
Upon revisiting the website to see if there was some other means of contact that I had missed I realised that the website could still accept orders (and your money) even though the business is for all intents and purposes not there.
Just a warning to "Consider: is the business behind the website I am dealing with still actually there."
