Verizon Removes Search Choices For BlackBerrys 510

shrugger writes "I picked up my BlackBerry this morning to do a search and noticed Bing as my default search engine. I thought this was very strange, since I didn't pick this setting. I went to change it back to Google and, to my chagrin, Bing was my only option! Apparently Verizon has pushed an update that removes all search providers except Bing. Thanks a lot Verizon!" The Reg notes: "The move is part of the five-year search and advertising deal Verizon signed with Microsoft in January for a rumored $500m."

Now, the reason it always SEEMS like it's the manager's fault is they're usually the source of information. When I was working for a web design agency I'd always have a better time on the projects where we had some level of client interaction. The more you get the easier it is to intuit when something is going wrong.

It seems that the thought of writing even a simple container or string class scares the crap out of people nowadays.

It should, because a bunch of incompatible framework classes sucks ass. A long time ago I was involved with a project that over time accumulated a combination of MFC stuff, COM wrappers, STL and our own custom strings and containers. Huge chunks of code did nothing but convert between the various formats. Never again will I get involved with reinventing wheels like that. I'll take the performance hit.

The consumer got screwed by the supplier in this instance.

If DRM prevails, this will be the reason why: the general public tends to view the consumption of media as if it were the consumption of food or oxygen. As if our only options are to cough up the asking price, or assume the life of a 'pirate', skulking around shady web sites grabbing torrents for the latest content.

What ever happened to the option of just not consuming? Shouldn't we say, instead of "the consumer got screwed", "the consumer received yet another demonstration of some of the flaws in the DRM model"? Wouldn't you rather seize the power that you have as a consumer and make a choice to spend your dollars elsewhere, and influence your friends to do the same, than to take the victim's stance and believe that we are totally helpless when somebody like the MPAA screws up and just assumes that we'll quietly get in the next line?

The simple fact is that DRM cannot succeed unless the consumer chooses to support it.

Probably most of the visitors to Israel carry directions to their public transport and the place they're staying. She cooperated fully with their questioning, to the extent that they were happy to leave her sitting out on the balcony enjoying views of the Red Sea while they dealt with her belongings. What makes her a terrorist suspect is the material she had on her, entirely consistent with her being a journalist travelling from a Middle Eastern country documenting the hate against Israel. Apparently living in one of Israel's neighbours, and showing an interest in the Israel-Palestine conflict, is reason enough to think you're a bomber. That's scary.

Israeli ISPs Caught Interfering With P2P Traffic 139

Fuzzzy writes "For a long time, people have suspected that Israeli ISPs are blocking or delaying P2P traffic. However, no hard evidence was provided, and the ISPs denied any interference. Today Ynetnews published a report on comprehensive research that for the first time proves those suspicions. Using Glasnost and Switzerland, an Internet attorney / blogger found evidence of deep packet inspection and deliberate delays. From the article: 'Since 2007 Ynet has received complaints according to which Israeli ISPs block P2P traffic. Those were brought to the media and were dismissed by the ISPs. Our findings were that there is direct and deliberate interference in P2P traffic by at least two out of the three major ISPs and that this interference exists by both P2P caching and P2P blocking.'"
