United States Begins Flying Stealth Bombers Over South Korea 567

skade88 writes "The New York Times is reporting that the United States has started flying B-2 stealth bomber runs over South Korea as a show of force to North Korea. The bombers flew 6,500 miles to bomb a South Korean island with mock explosives. Earlier this month the U.S. Military ran mock B-52 bombing runs over the same South Korean island. The U.S. military says it shows that it can execute precision bombing runs at will with little notice needed. The U.S. also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting its allies in the region. The North Koreans have been making threats to turn South Korea into a sea of fire. North Korea has also made threats claiming they will nuke the United States' mainland."

4-Billion-Pixel Panorama View From Curiosity Rover 101

A reader points out that there is a great new panorama made from shots from the Curiosity Rover. "Sweep your gaze around Gale Crater on Mars, where NASA's Curiosity rover is currently exploring, with this 4-billion-pixel panorama stitched together from 295 images. ...The entire image stretches 90,000 by 45,000 pixels and uses pictures taken by the rover's two MastCams. The best way to enjoy it is to go into fullscreen mode and slowly soak up the scenery — from the distant high edges of the crater to the enormous and looming Mount Sharp, the rover's eventual destination."

Here's the link for installing a Windows Start Menu into Windows 8. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/make-windows-8-suck-less-with-classic-shell/

I never do.

Really, the biggest change in Windows 8, is that I have to press the windows key when I login. Nothing else really changed in the OS for me. I still just hit win+r for the "Run" prompt, or click a shortcut in the number of places I've aggregated them that make much more sense than Win 7's start menu layout. I got Windows 8 because it was just $15 for a valid windows license.

I'm in full agreement that there's no reason to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8. But if you get windows 8, it's not the end of the world (unless you're really married to the start menu). Or hell, if you really need the start menu, just go download it and install it. If you're on slashdot you should know how to do this. This askslashdot is kind of a no-brainer.

That was a very insightful reply. ECOT in the beginning, from what we heard before my sister came in, was really in shambles. By the time my sister started though, it was her answer to dealing with bullies, lack of public education attention, and she could work on things at her pace. Every once in awhile, she did have some issues getting a hold of teachers, but they were bombarded for the longest time. She was really proud of herself, for being able to accomplish her work using ECOT though, and it really improved her self-esteem.

I do agree though, that it could be very situational to the child. ECOT worked for her, whereas it may not of, for your brother. I just wish I could of had ECOT when I was that age. I always found public education to be the most boring waste of time in the world. Never challenged, horrible environments, and hated all my peers.

Comment YES it is, and here's proof (Score 2) 349

My sister, when she lived in Ohio, had a learning disability. It wasn't until my family discovered ECOT that she finally had the fighting chance to graduate. They sent her a locked down computer, and gave her all the help and support she needed over the phone for all her lessons. Electronic home-schooling should seriously be considered all over the United States.

Submission + - Affordable Mind-Controlled Robotic Telepresence (deviceguru.com)

__aajbyc7391 writes: Software developer Robert Oschler has launched a Kickstarter project aimed at creating a low-cost, mind-controlled, robotic telepresence system, based on integrating support for WowWee's Rovio robot, Emotiv's EPOC neuroheadset, and Skype communications into a new version of Oschler's Robodance software. The headset's ability to detect head movement and facial gestures will enable those with limited mobility to explore their home or any place else in the world where there's a Rovio they can connect to, at a fraction of the cost of other alternatives, says Oschler. As a reward for supporting the Kickstarter project, contributors at certain levels will have the opportunity to experience 10- or 20-minute 'telepresence tours' if the project achieves its funding goal.

Submission + - Candle Flame Contains Millions of Diamonds (st-andrews.ac.uk)

eldavojohn writes: As odd as it sounds, candle flames contain all four known forms of carbon. Zixue Su, Yang Zhang and University of St Andrews chemistry Professor Wuzong Zhou have recently published a paper utilizing a new technique that leveraged anodic aluminium oxide films as collectors to actually observe diamond, graphitic, fullerenic and amorphous particles from a live candle flame. The result of a challenge from a colleague that claimed no one knows what a flame is actually made of, Dr. Zhou and his team deduced that around 1.5 million diamond nanoparticles are created every second in a candle flame. Some more light has been shed on how the flame transforms hydro-carbon molecules into carbon dioxide that could pave the way to a new nucleation mechanism for diamond growth and fullerene formation in a combustion synthesizing process.
