Submission + - Google Maps Street view adds six cities (google.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Street View feature of Google Maps has been expanded beyond its former nine-city scope, adding Chicago, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Tucson, and my home town of Philadelphia. Hey, I can see my house from here! They mapped my street on a Monday morning this summer. Thanks guys, but next time try not to come on trash day!

Submission + - We're Doomed: MySpace App Platform Coming Soon (readwriteweb.com)

marshallkirkpatrick writes: "After all the celebration over the Facebook app platform, everyone feels the need to get into the game. Next up is MySpace, whose traditional hostility to outside developers and rampant spam will likely make for an even more noxious experience than the ridiculous menu of crap now available several months after the launch of Facebook's platform. This article argues that it's the syndication power of the Facebook Wall that's really lead to the service's huge growth, not the low-brow mess unfolding in the over-hyped app directory. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/were_doomed_myspace_apps_platf.php"

XKCD 327 — Exploits of a Mom 52

Looks like xkcd's Little Bobby Tables isn't getting the appreciation he deserves at school. CT: Sorry, this wasn't supposed to be on the main page. But damn it's a funny one.

Submission + - rsync.net warrant canary falls silent (rsync.net)

An anonymous reader writes: Because of restrictions on revealing warrants, searches and seizures, rsync.net provides a cryptographically signed declaration every week that "No warrants have ever been served to rsync.net, or rsync.net principals or employees. No searches or seizures of any kind have ever been performed on rsync.net assets." Obviously, "special note should be taken if these messages ever cease being updated, or are removed from this page." This weekly declaration was last updated 9 days ago.

Submission + - Nine inch Nails ditch label

smash writes: "After much public comment on the record industry in general and and his label in particular, barely a week after Radiohead, Trent Reznor has ditched his label and will focus on sales via the net. Read the scoop here. Is this the beginning of the end for the RIAA?"

Submission + - Speaking Linuxski (bbc.co.uk)

s31523 writes: "In an effort to cut the cost of teaching information technology, Russian schools have adopted a plan to have all computers running Linux by 2009. According to Alexey Smirnov, Director General of the Company ALTLinux, schools formerly tended to run illegal copies of Microsoft operating systems, but after Russia entered the WTO, the laws became much stricter and schools began to be prosecuted for doing so. Some have criticized the plan, saying students will have trouble finding jobs later due to a lack of familiarity with the Windows OS."

Submission + - 64-bit Kernel mode only OS, No Wussies (losethos.com)

losethos writes: "LoseThos is an open source, free, 64-bit operating system created absolutely from scratch with no restrictions (freer than GPL). It's designed to serve people who program for entertainment. It just supports a VGA display, keyboard, mouse, harddrive, CD-ROM and internal PC speaker. What more do you need for writing games? It's designed to serve as a supplemental operating system you duel boot to for this purpose. It's modern, however, supporting 64-bit (only) computing and multicore processors. It's like the old days when you could access all memory, use all instructions, access all ports, read all disk blocks. The memory space is identity mapped to physical memory so you can easily have processes interact. It has the most advanced command-line on the planet, seriously. Basically, as you type, it goes straight into a C/C++ compiler, with code outside functions executing immediately and the command line supports a variety of widgets including graphic, trees and file links."

Submission + - Help the Galactic Census

Gr8Apes writes: CNN has a story about scientists needing your help in a galactic census. From the story: They are asking volunteers on the Internet to help classify the galaxies as either elliptical or spiral and note, where possible, in which direction they rotate. Astronomers say computer programs have been unable to reliably classify the star systems. With 10,000 to 20,000 people working to classify the galaxies, the process could take as little as a month. With /. alone, they might be able to do it in a week. Give them a helping hand by signing up at Galaxy Zoo.
