How did the metro interface get in the way? With Windows 8.1.1, desktop stays in desktop. Did your wife only ever use 8.0? (if so that would explain a lot).
I find Win8.1.1 to be quite functional, usable, stable, and productive. I freely admit that 8.0 was kind of annoying unless you wanted to spend a fair amount of time tweaking and climbing a learning curve. But Win8.1.1 (without any Start8 crutches required) works pretty well.
Thinner... lighter... better screen... impressive touch and pen support... and a full PC... tons of innovation, and listening to feedback and acting on it in a very timely manner. Yeah, Microsoft, just cut that out (rolling eyes).
OSX has no touch screen, no touch capabilities at all, and no direct pen-on-screen support either. For artists that want to sketch on the go, or for students who want to take notes in classes like math where hand-writing is far superior to keyboard, the Mac Air just isn't nearly as good as the SP3. SP3 is lighter and thinner with extra capabilities, and costs about the same. The main drawbacks are the "lapability" (ugh) and keyboard quality... Air definitely wins there. I'd say a writer/blogger would be better off with an Air. But there are definitely niches where the SP3 is just a no-brainer... a great device.

Seriously the XP941 is a native PCIe controller, not multiple SATA controllers raided together with a PCIe bridge controller. As a result, it is almost 1/2 the price, and still has similar performance (it is only a PCIe 1x device that does 1.2GBs reads/writes, vs the PCIe 4x device that only does 1.8GBs).
Pretty sure that it's a PCIe 2.0 x4 device.

Amazon does have tons of books I might not find otherwise, but I still love just wandering around in a bookstore for hours, just browsing. I've found a number of great books that way, that I likely never would have seen just searching a website.
While I find books that way, too, I tend to find a LOT more stuff I like because of the recommendations on Amazon. Those algorithms are scary good nowadays.
Some got it through the exchanges, some got it through their employer, and some got on Medicare. Apparently the CBO was surprised by how many people signed up through their employer; they calculated it would be about the same amount, but that shot up a lot; hard to say why at this point, but I'm sure we'll get all the details pretty soon; everyone is obsessed with trying to either prove or disprove it's working.

Like most numbers that come out of government, it takes a bit of creative license. Both major parties have mastered this deception. The real question is... Are we better off now that this law is in place? To which I have to think, probably not.

Granted, this IS a right-wing change to health insurance (from the previous generation of right-wingers, not the Tea Party wacko set we have now). This is a gimme to health care insurers, with no single payer, etc. It's a single step, but it's a good one until the Tea Party flames out and we can get back to having a somewhat functional Congress again. That's going to be a long time in coming, I suspect, so for now, it seems as good as we're going to get.
