Trepidity writes: "Longtime Linux-MIPS hacker Thiemo Seufer died in a car accident on December 26. Among other things, he was a major contributor to the Linux kernel's MIPS port, served as the MIPS maintainer/co-maintainer for binutils for 5 years, was the main supporter of the Debian MIPS port, and produced thousands of patches to free-software packages ranging from SBCL to QEMU to get them working (or working better) on or with the MIPS platform."

Trepidity writes: "In its roundup of how to choose a netbook, The Economist suggests that users "avoid the temptation" to go for a Windows-based netbook, and in particular to treat them as mini laptops on which you'll install a range of apps. In their view, by the time you add the specs needed to run Windows and Windows apps effectively, you might as well have just bought a smallish laptop. Instead, they suggest the sweet spot is ultra-lite, Linux-based netbooks, with a focus on pre-installed software that caters to common tasks. They particularly like OpenOffice, which they rate as easier to use than MS Word and having "no compatibility problems", as well as various photo-management software."

Wow, I've neglected this bio section for years (damn, being on Slashdot for 12 years makes me feel old). From 1997 to 2000, it was a simple exhortation to support your local BBS, claiming that BBSing wasn't dead (though maybe it was on life support). By 2000, it was obviously dead, so I changed this bio to reference a cDc textfile, Remembrance of Things Past [cultdeadcow.com], and link to textfiles.com [textfiles.com]. By 2009, my interests have mostly moved on from BBSing, though I still think it's an interesting culture that I unfortunately only caught the tail end of. Perhaps I'll write something else here shortly.
