Submission + - Learning to program 2

I think thougth the time has come that he should start learning to program, and learn some of the basics that are all too often overlooked nowdays. But where do you start these days? I taught myself C with a copy of K&R and a compiler that fitted on a floppy, but it was really geeky stuff at that time just to get a computer to do anything.
Nowdays where do you start? Like most kids of his age he does not even know what a command line prompt is. And everything has to be super flashy or they are just not interested. Anybody any suggestions for what toolchains could be suitable for getting a modern 13 year old on the trail?
