Submission + - Ericsson CTO: 5G is about integrated wireless technologies, not just speeds (mobileeurope.co.uk) 1

concertina226 writes: As European operators continue to roll out 4G LTE networks, the wider telecoms industry is already thinking ahead about 5G. Ulf Ewaldsson, CTO of Ericsson, says the vendor has spent the last three years working on its vision of 5G and believes that the industry is missing a trick if it chooses to focus on fast speeds as the key benefit of this next gen technology.

“One of our competitors recently came out and said, 'We can do 1 GBPS downloading over high frequency radio node'. That's not that difficult to do. It's super easy. I think 5G should definitely be capable of at least 10 GBPS and that's the requirement [we're working on],” Ewaldsson tells Mobile Europe, following the news that Ericsson is to build three ICT data centres to virtualise its systems.

“Some of our competitors are talking about 5G as a new air interface, an ultra-high bandwidth frequency in the radio spectrum, but we think that all the investments in the lower bands, for example LTE, will also evolve with 5G,” he says.

Submission + - HP to actively 'seek redress' for alleged Autonomy accounting fraud (computerworlduk.com)

concertina226 writes: Hewlett-Packard is planning to "aggressively" seek recompense for alleged accounting fraud related to the acquisition of its Autonomy unit, which resulted in the vendor taking a non-cash impairment charge of £5.5 billion (US$8.8 billion).

HP acquired Autonomy in 2011 for $10.3 billion under the leadership of then-CEO Leo Apotheker, who was ousted after a short and tumultuous run at the troubled company. On Tuesday, HP said an internal investigation has found Autonomy was "substantially overvalued at the time of its acquisition due to the misstatement of Autonomy's financial performance, including its revenue, core growth rate and gross margins, and the misrepresentation of its business mix."

concertina226 writes: Facebook claims companies could start court battles with data protection authorities if the regulators are given powers to levy fines of 2% of global turnover for data protection law breaches.

Facebook said the European Commission's proposed sanctions regime — which is contained in its draft General Data Protection Regulation — could also put off US and other businesses from trading within the EU, meaning less jobs being created.

Submission + - 'Malnets' behind two thirds of cyberattacks attacks in 2012 (techworld.com)

concertina226 writes: A growing army of malware delivery networks – ‘malnets’ – account for two thirds of all cyberattacks and most current technologies offer an inadequate response to the threat, security firm Blue Coat has argued in a new analysis.

In total, the company was now tracking 1,500 individual malnets, three times the number it saw only six months ago, making the phenomenon one of cybercrime’s boom areas.

Unlike botnets – built mostly from compromised PCs – malnets seem to possess a devolved and constantly-shifting command and control system that makes them much harder to shut down; Shnakule alone issued changes to its host C&C servers 56,000 times so far in 2012, Blue Coat said.

Submission + - To OpenStack or not to OpenStack? Gartner claims "dangerous myths" (computerworlduk.com)

concertina226 writes: A scathing report about OpenStack from research firm Gartner warns businesses to beware of considerable hype and says misconceptions about the open source cloud computing project are leading to "dangerous myths" that are impacting IT adoption and investments.

OpenStack is a nascent technology driven by a group of self-serving vendors who are pushing their own agendas over the usability of the cloud management platform, argues Lydia Leong, the author of the report and a research VP at Gartner who focuses on cloud computing.

As OpenStack hype continues to build, she says vendors are associating themselves with the project for marketing reasons, but are reticent about contributing significant resources to the broader goals of the project.

Submission + - Galaxy Tabs don't infringe Apple design patents, German court backtracks (computerworlduk.com)

Qedward writes: Apple could be on the verge of losing the bans on sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab it has won in German courts. If the Düsseldorf lower regional court were to rule now, Samsung would be unlikely to be found infringing on Apple's design rights, which would overturn earlier rulings that halted sales of Galaxy tablets, a court spokesman said yesterday.

Apple is after a permanent sales ban on the Galaxy 7.7, 8.9, 10.1, 10.1N and 10.1V in Germany because it claims Samsung infringes on its design rights, said Andreas Vitek, spokesman for the lower regional court of Düsseldorf. But during a hearing Judge Johanna Brückner-Hofmann said that if she had to review the case now, Samsung would not be likely to be found infringing Apple's rights, Vitek said.
