While I agree that there has been progress on the unified notification, there has been 3D accelerated composited desktops (which IMO look better than Aero and Aqua) for a while now in the form of Compiz. Yeah, it may be tacked on, but in many ways, it can integrate well with Metacity and Kwin. I even still use it in KDE4 over it's built in compositing as it adds more options, and generally runs faster (for me anyways). I never really understood why neither desktop just didn't stick with that instead of reinventing the wheel.

Submission + - NetFlix outage

An anonymous reader writes: As of a bit after 7 pm EDT, the NetFlix site started to experience problems, going from being completely unreachable to intermittent responses, and back down to being unreachable. Given the outage pattern, it is likely that an outage on a limited number of servers caused a cascading outage when the remainder of the servers could not handle the combined load. No information seems to be available at this point concerning the expected duration of the outage.

Submission + - South Korean Cartoonists Cry Foul Over Simpsons

theodp writes: When asked to animate a dark commentary about labor practices in Asia's cartoon industry — the edgy title sequence for the The Simpsons' episode 'MoneyBART' — staff from the South Korean production company Akom raised a rare protest. Even after being toned down, the sequence created by British graffiti artist Banksy depicted a dungeon-like complex where droning Asian animators worked in sweatshops, rats scurried around with human bones, kittens were spliced up into Bart Simpson dolls, and a gaunt unicorn punched holes into DVDs. The satire, Akom founder and president Nelson Shin argued, gave the impression that Asian artists slave away in subpar sweatshops when they actually animate much of The Simpsons every week in high-tech workshops in downtown Seoul. Still, South Korean animators make one-third the salaries of their American counterparts, and Shin declined to comment on the full extent of the work his company has outsourced to SEK, a state-run animation studio of North Korea. Some argue that the Banksy sequence's gray and forlorn atmosphere more accurately depicts the sweatshop-like conditions in North Korea.

Submission + - Black Hat Talk on China Cyber Army Pulled (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: A talk that would have given conference attendees a unique profile of China's secretive government-sponsored hacking efforts has been pulled from the Black Hat schedule. Wayne Huang, one of the presenters of the talk and CTO with Taiwanese security vendor Armorize, said that he decided to pull the talk after vetting it with several organizations that had contributed intelligence and getting pressure from several places, both in Taiwan and in China. Huang wouldn't say who complained or why, but he said that by pulling the talk Armorize will be able to maintain its good relations with the Asian security community. 'We ran the materials by some key people and they were not happy with it,' he said.

Submission + - Why Apple won't recall the iPhone 4 (thinq.co.uk)

Stoobalou writes: There have been hundreds of shrill reports from Apple-bating hacks bemoaning Apple's lack of testing when it comes to the iPhone 4's inability to hold a signal, but we have to question how many of these commenters actually use the handset on a daily basis.
