2009, Year of the Linux Delusion 696

gadgetopia writes "An article has come out claiming (yet again) that 2009 will be the year of Linux, and bases this prediction on the fact that low-power ARM processors will be in netbooks which won't have enough power to run Windows, but then says these new netbooks will be geared to 'web only' applications which suits Linux perfectly. And, oh yeah, Palm might save Linux, too." The article goes on to skewer the year of Linux thing that seems to show up on pretty much every tech news site throughout December and January as lazy editors round out their year with softball trolling stories and "Year End Lists." We should compile a year-end list about this :)

TiVo Patent Victory Over Dish Network Upheld 186

Thomas Hawk writes "An appeals court today shot down Dish Network's last chance to avoid a multi-million lawsuit verdict won by TiVo over their time shifting DVR technology. In addition to having to pay TiVo a minimum of $92 million, Dish Network will also now have to honor a court injunction to turn off DVR software to most of their customers. I hope Dish Network customers like commercials with their daily dose of Dr. Phil."

Submission + - RIAA is out of control yet again.

An anonymous reader writes: The RIAA is once again at their old tricks. The band Nine Inch Nails has intentionally 'leaked' songs via USB keys hidden at restrooms during their current European tour. Sites hosting the intentionally 'leaked' songs are now being sent cease and desist orders. The link is here: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/ news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=69841 I found it via http://theninhotline.net/ When will this ever end? The RIAA is just plain out of control.

Submission + - Get Vista or Stick with XP?

An anonymous reader writes: I currently find myself in a somewhat unique situation. I am the IT director for a small company which primarily does web and multimedia development. I recently received our annual IT budget for 2007, and discovered that there is enough capital for us to do some upgrades in addition to our normal operating expenses. As the majority of us know Vista was released less than a week ago. We are currently running Windows Server 2003 on our servers and have 50 seats with XP Pro. Although I haven't done a ton of research on Vista, I would like to get a general consensus of the Slashdot Community. Is it worth upgrading to Vista now or should I wait a year or two?

Submission + - Microsoft to make DRM Linux like modules

wellingj writes: "As Reported on Groklaw and LXer.
Microsoft is pushing a patent that in terms of OS stability and reliability is a good move. However, Microsoft has taken this good idea and decided to squeeze the pennies out of it. The patent proposes to modularize device drivers much like Linux, and apply DRM to these modules. The net effect would be that you would have to pay extra for OS harware suport. Things like USB keys, DVD-ROMS, Raid drives and video cards would most likely not be supported 'out of the box'."

Submission + - LG Produces iPhone look-a-like

omegashenron writes: CNET Asia reports that LG intends on releasing a mobile phone similar in design to Apple's iphone.

The device, known as "Prada" retails for $776 (USD) and is set for European release next month. Is apple losing its edge?

Submission + - John Carmack: Gamers Don't Need Vista or DX 10

Freshly Exhumed writes: In an interview with Marcus Yam at Daily Tech legendary PC/Console game creator John Carmack holds forth on DirectX 10: "Personally, I wouldn't jump at something like DX10 right now. I would let things settle out a little bit and wait until there's a really strong need for it." and then zings Microsoft's marketers over DX10's mandatory use of the Vista OS: "Carmack then said that he's quite satisfied with Windows XP, going as far to say that Microsoft is 'artificially' forcing gamers to move to Windows Vista for DX10." There are a few good tidbits on Xbox 360 vs. PS3 development, and a fairly clear disinterest in Wii as a platform for his company's products is shown.

Submission + - Macbook Pro Display only capable of 262,144 Colour

An anonymous reader writes: People have been noticing the Apple Macbook Pros have grainy displays. Apparently the problem lies in that the Macbook Pro's display is only capable of displaying 262,144 colours at a time. Beyond that it dithers, thus the graininess. For any old Amigans out there, they'll remember that number from HAM8! This link explains the nature of the problem in greater detail. How sad that Apple's flagship notebook display is defective by design.

Submission + - Flash Player 9 for Linux Released

Ryan writes: "Flash Player 9 for Linux has left beta and is now available on Adobe's site. Tinic Uro, a member of the team behind the Flash player made the announcement and also added some inside information about the player development:
Alright, so far so good... That does not mean that this is a release which I consider feature complete. We do however consider this version to be vastly better than any previous Flash Player for Linux. Since customers were starting to ask for a final version we decided to feature freeze what we have. So two months ago we moved the Flash Player 9 for Linux code into a separate code branch for stabilization.
