Comment For gamers? (Score 2) 110

So what would be the difference between SSDs for gamers and those for non-gamers? The specs appear to be fairly normal high end for the current SSD market, but nothing exceptional. Maybe a sticker on it displaying a demon wielding an oversized SF gun?

Indeed, otherwise heat pipes would not be so fashionable, these days. It is simply because they work. And if we have a look at air coolers and their reviews, the cooling capacity is not very strongly related to the surface area. It was even remarked that modern heat sinks place the fins too close together, and that air had difficulty going between them. That heat sinks with the fins wider apart, and as such less total area, were more effective coolers. And it is quite easy to get dust out of a finned cooler. But getting dust out of a copper sponge is different matter altogether.

Kimberley did a great job here. I hope she gets a promotion over this fuzz. It would be well deserved. I cannot travel first class with my family, when I am the only one of my family with a first class ticket. And as such, he cannot have priority boarding with his children, when only he has priority boarding. Easy as that.

Comment i7 920, a chip for a decade. (Score 1) 391

I have got an i7 920 when it was just released. Afer 3 years, added some memory, still going strong. In a year or two, add a SSD, it can still for another three years, and probably longer. The only real reason to get a new machine now, is when reduced power consumption earns the new machine back within 5 years.

Comment Internet doing more harm than good. (Score 1) 91

I do not think the internet is the answer to young children. It is used only to shout "yolo" on network sites, post naked selfies and hashtags and whatsapp messages and [pick your deity] knows what. Is this is an advantage to a child? The amount of information bashing on a child's brain is so massive that it can no longer make the distinction between relevant information and nonsense. Parents of children that do not have a computer and/or internet are usually not capable of teaching their child to make this distinction. You may call me old fashioned, but school going children would have a bigger advantage learning their native language properly. In my country, people write job application letters with dozens of language errors, because they literally do not know any better, because that was all they needed to communicate with others over the internet. Next they are surprised and threaten the potential employer when explained that that is not the way to go. The conventional library is the way to go.
