Submission + - Mozilla Asks Users For Help (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "If you’ve been paying attention to my writing, you know that I’m a Firefox fan. I have been for years. While that loyalty was strained over the long, long time it took for Firefox 4 to finally be released, since then I feel that I’ve been handsomely rewarded for staying with my browser. Over the past summer and fall, we’ve seen 4 new releases, moving the version number up to 8. While I personally think that more appropriate numbers would have been 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4, the name doesn’t change the fact that Firefox has been quickly and steadily improving for the past year, and it shows. It might be too little too late though."

Submission + - Dragon Age Multiplayer in Frostbite 2 Engine? (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "An insider has revealed upcoming plans for a multiplayer Dragon Age title. Not only that, but it will apparently be developed using DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, which we’ve seen in titles such as Battlefield 3. Supposedly the game looks “stunning” so far. Details are unclear so far as to whether the multiplayer will be available as part of a full retail title or as a downloadable game or expansion. The insider promised both PvP and PvE gameplay along with playable dragon characters. The combat will take place in an arena."

Journal Journal: in which i am a noob all over again 17

I haven't posted a journal here in almost three years, because I couldn't find the button to start a new entry. ...yeah, it turns out that it's at the bottom of the page.

So... hi, Slashdot. I used to be really active here, but now I mostly lurk and read. I've missed you.

Submission + - Battlefield 3 PS3 Owners will get BF 1943 (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Back at E3 earlier this year, Sony announced that PlayStation 3 owners who purchased Battlefield 3 would get Battlefield 1943 free. When Battlefield 3 was released this wasn't the case.

Now, EA has officially announced that they will be allowing owners of Battlefield 3 on PS3 to download their free copy of Battlefield 1943."

Submission + - Video Game Storytelling: Why Minecraft Matters (tekgoblin.com) 1

tekgoblin writes: "A lot of people don’t seem to realize it, but Minecraft’s survival mode is one of the most effective emergent storytelling games ever made. No linear storyline, quests, dialog, or cut scenes. Just you, your friends, and your story, and once you’ve been playing for a few hours you certainly have one. You don’t need to worry about what you’re going to do in the game. Some people will tell you to build a metropolis while others may expect you to map out the continent. I myself play the game in a manner that matches up with the personality of a Lord of the Rings dwarf. After only a few hours everyone ends up with something in the game that they place value in. Playing with others online just enhances the experience because you all try to work together while each pursuing your own personal goals. As a result your randomly generated world that no one has seen before feels all the more alive as others are shaping it around you."

Submission + - Chuck Norris Appears in WoW Commercial (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "For years, World of Warcraft players have told rumors and facts about Chuck Norris. World of Warcraft players have even gone as far as creating characters that look like Chuck Norris. Back in the early days of World of Warcraft, a GM was asked the epic question “”What happens if the unstoppable force would hit the immovable object?” The answer? ”Chuck Norris dies.” Chuck Norris has finally appeared in a World of Warcraft commercial and it couldn’t be more epic."

Submission + - Halo Anniversary Review (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Back when 343 announced it was going to release a new version of Halo CE for it’s 10 year anniversary, I was worried. It’s very difficult to reimagine a game without pissing off it’s old fans, and very easy to screw it up. I must admit for a while I was really against the idea.
Fast forward a few months. We’ve had a few trailers and teasers released, and my suspicion is starting to thaw. The new graphics look really nice. And then comes the day that 343 confirms the rumors that the new graphics engine is built entirely on top of the original code, and at any time in game players can toggle back and forth between old and new. That little bit of news was the last straw and suddenly November 15th couldn’t come fast enough."

Submission + - Motorola Mobility Stockholders Sign Off On Google (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Stockholders of Motorola Mobility have given the “all green” of their 12.5 billion dollar buyout by Google. Apparently it was met with very large support as 99% of shareholders gave approval to the deal. We guess we are not the only ones excited to see what Google can do with control of a hardware company. We still have to wait on the government to approve this acquisition, but we don’t see much opposition possible for this buyout as it does not appear to have any hindrance on competition."

Submission + - Microsoft taking orders for Surface 2 (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Microsoft debuted its second generation of Surface at CES 2011 and is now taking orders for it. The new surface table will cost you a solid $8,400 which is quite lower than the previous price of $12,500 for the first generation Surface. The newer version of Microsoft Surface is manufacturered by Samsung Electronics which allowed for Microsoft to take better advantage of newer touch screen technology. The Samsung version of Microsoft Surface is also much more thin than the first generation version of Surface."

Submission + - Cloud Gaming comes to Xbox in the Future (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Microsoft’s Brian Prince at GDC China talked a little bit about the future of the Xbox. He ventured into the possibilities of cloud gaming and said that services like Gaikai and Onlive are the distant future of online gaming and the services have certain limitations.
The drawbacks he was referring to is that the services are relying on big game or AAA titles “typically these platforms focus on AAA PC game titles,” he says. “If you’re not in that space, they don’t want to talk to you as much. Another problem is that your gamers need high speed internet access. That’s fine if you live in a city, but most of America doesn’t live in a city, for example.” Microsoft plans to use their Azure service to save game data and allow cross platform game resumes from the browser to console to PC."

Youtube

Submission + - YouTube gets revamp (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Over the past year Google has been overhauling all of it’s services graphically, and most of the changes came over the Spring and Summer. One notable exception has been YouTube, which hasn’t received the Google+ theme. Until today.
Besides a graphic update to match the Google+ theme of sharp, flat colors and clean design, YouTube is receiving new functionality as well. Not surprisingly, Google+ will be much more heavily integrated, letting users recommend videos to friends from Google+, similar to Facebook’s Like mechanism."
