Would Twitter Make President Obama 'Follow' the Tea Party If the Price Is Right? 121

theodp (442580) writes Giving others the impression that individuals support something that they actually don't could get you fined and placed under house arrest. But if you're Twitter, it could boost your bottom line. Gigaom's Carmel DeAmicis reports that brands pay Twitter to falsely appear in your following list, an advertising technique brought to light by William Shatner after he saw that 'MasterCard' appeared in his following list despite the fact that he didn't follow it. "By making it look like someone follows an account that they don't," writes DeAmicis, "it sends a false signal that said user cares about that brand. Although the brands are marked as 'promoted,' it's not necessarily clear that the user in question doesn't actually follow the brand. There's ethical considerations to be had. Hypothetical examples: What if you're vegan and don't want people to think you're following Burger King? Or you're the CEO of Visa and don't want people thinking you're following MasterCard? Or you're a pro-life activist and don't want people thinking you're following Planned Parenthood?" Or, if you're @BarackObama and don't want people to think you're following @TPPatriots!

Submission + - Google and Apple weasling out of "Do not track" (nytimes.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Per an op-ed in today's New York Times, Google, Apple, and others would be effectively exempt from "Do not track":

[T]he rules would allow the largest Internet giants to continue scooping up data about users on their own sites and on other sites that include their plug-ins, such as Facebook’s “Like” button or an embedded YouTube video. This giant loophole would make “Do Not Track” meaningless.

Submission + - Newest Stealth Fighter's Ground Attack Sensors are 10 Years Behind Older Jets (thedailybeast.com)

schwit1 writes: America’s $400 billion, top-of-the-line aircraft can’t see the battlefield all that well. Which means it’s actually worse than its predecessors at fighting today’s wars.

The problem stems from the fact that the technology found on one of the stealth fighter’s primary air-to-ground sensors—its nose-mounted Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS)—is more than a decade old and hopelessly obsolete. The EOTS, which is similar in concept to a large high-resolution infrared and television camera, is used to visually identify and monitor ground targets. The system can also mark targets for laser-guided bombs.

Older jets currently in service with the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps can carry the latest generation of sensor pods, which are far more advanced than the EOTS sensor carried by the F-35.

The end result is that when the F-35 finally becomes operational after its myriad technical problems, cost overruns, and massive delays, in some ways it will be less capable than current fighters in the Pentagon’s inventory.

Submission + - India Faces its First Major Net Neutrality Issue

Siddharth Srinivas writes: Bharti Airtel Ltd, India's largest telecommunications carrier by subscribers, will soon start charging users extra money for using services such as Skype as Indian operators look to boost their data network and revenues.

The Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) is no stranger to Net Neutrality having sent a note to the ISPs in 2006 suggesting a position for Net Neutrality. TRAI had also recently rejected a proposal by Airtel and other operators the right to charge for free services such as Whatsapp.. Consumers await TRAI's response to Airtel's new pricing.

With no laws enforcing net neutrality in India. India's Net Neutrality discussions have just begun, with proponents rapidly trying to increase awareness.

Submission + - Egyptian electrical engineering (thealphanews.com)

hh4m writes: Evidence of circuits and wiring diagrams found in great pyramid, could it be a great power house?

"New images from inside the Great Pyramid shaft reveal evidence of electrical terminals, cables and even ancient wiring diagrams!

The discovery of electrical contacts and wiring inside the Great Pyramid, along with markings that show how to connect them, do not fit anywhere in conventional Egyptology but confirm the theory first published in my book, The Giza Power Plant: Technologies of Ancient Egypt in 1998.

Only this theory has ever made such predictions, and every robot explorer they send up the shafts finds more and more evidence to prove that the theory is correct."

Submission + - Chrome OS to Support "Legacy" PC Apps

adeelarshad82 writes: According to a message posted to a public mailing list dedicated to Chrome OS a new feature is in the works that will grant users access to "legacy PC applications" through some kind of remote desktop connection process. Google software engineer Gary Kamark, who first spilled the beans on the feature, calls the process, "Chromoting." The current speculation amongst Chrome enthusiasts is that the Chromoting process is more akin to a VPN/sharing functionality than anything else. In that case, one would have to leave one's Windows-based desktop or laptop system on in order to access apps via a connected Chrome OS computer—which, itself, is hardly a technological leap given that numerous applications today offer users an analogous screen-sharing / remote access functionality.

Submission + - Flash on Windows Phone 7 devices? (reportech.net) 1

TalTara writes: While Microsoft downplays the possibility of Flash on Windows Phone 7 devices, Adobe seems to support the Windows Phone 7 operating system with its new Flash 10.1 — "Target mobile operating systems for Flash Player include: Android, Microsoft Windows Phone 7" (Picture — http://bit.ly/bVxSsM). This could mean we will see the first WP7 devices with flash support, a thing maybe Microsoft wants to surprise us with?
