Journal Journal: New Idea for Moderation

Here is an idea that should eliminate any unnecessary "+ 1, Funny" moderation. How about a "+ 1, Geeky" moderation. Anything that falls into this category would be modded up. Of course it should be a "no karma bonus" mod, like + 1, Funny. The most common example is a star wars ref. This could be modded +1, Geeky. No longer funny, mod points would go at a much better pace. The opposite for this would be -1, Not Geeky.

Submission + - MPAA wants to stop DVRs from recording some movies (arstechnica.com)

OrochimaruVoldemort writes: "Ars is reporting that the MPAA wants DVRs from recording movies that have been released as DVDs very recently. This comes as a request to the FCC regarding the use of Selecetive Output Control. FTA: "The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) wants a waiver on that restriction in the case of high-definition movies broadcast prior to their release as DVDs. The Petitioners' theatrical movies are too valuable in this early distribution window to risk their exposure to unauthorized copying," MPAA wrote to the FCC last month. 'Distribution over insecure outputs would facilitate the illegal copying and redistribution of this high value content, causing untold damage to the DVD and other 'downstream' markets'.""

Submission + - Safari Flaw Worse Than Before, Microsoft Says (pcworld.com)

OrochimaruVoldemort writes: According to Microsoft, the Safari bug is now worse than before. PC World reports: "It turns out that if this flaw is exploited in combination with a second unpatched bug in Internet Explorer, attackers can run unauthorized software on a victim's computer, according to Aviv Raff, a security researcher. Microsoft is taking the issue seriously. It released a security advisory on the problem late Friday, a sign that it may be working on a patch for the IE flaw. The advisory says that the vulnerability has to do with the way Windows handles desktop executables and recommends that Windows users "restrict use of Safari as a web browser until an appropriate update is available from Microsoft and/or Apple." The attack reportedly affects all versions of Windows XP and Vista, Microsoft said."

Submission + - Pac-Man Movie in Development. No, Seriously (arstechnica.com)

OrochimaruVoldemort writes: "Now this is unbelieveable. Producer Steven Paul are currently in development of a Pac-Man movie. Ars has the story: "Despite the fact that video game-inspired films have not yet attained either critical or financial success, the film industry still believes in them enough to invest some serious cash in upcoming game-based projects. Producer Steven Paul, who has brought movie audiences recent gems such as Ghost Rider and Bratz, announced that his production company, Crystal Sky Pictures, has managed to bring in $200 million to help fund five films." Also mentioned are Castlevainia and Hard Boiled. Hopefully, Halo will make that list."

Submission + - LifeLock spokesperson gets ID Stolen (cnn.com) 1

OrochimaruVoldemort writes: It seems as though LifeLock isn't as secure as Todd Davis makes it out. According to a LifeLock spokesman, his identity has been stolen. For two years, Davis has been daring hackers to steal his ID. Looks like he got what he wanted. CNN reports: "Now, LifeLock customers in Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia are suing Davis, claiming his service didn't work as promised and he knew it wouldn't, because the service had failed even him."

Journal Journal: Who should go to Mars and Why 1

Simply put, Mars is a place where unless future travellers learn to live off the land, they will die. But, the main question is who should go to the red planet? I say that there should be one biologist, one geologist, two technical crewmen, and two Christians. The reasoning behind the first four is self explanitory, but the reason I say that Christians should be the first to Mars is because thier religion is one of hope. They would certainly be able to endure cabin fever, and still be opt

OrochimaruVoldemort writes: Microsoft has said to engaget that They do not plan on making new consoles available in 2009. This comes from the same company that said it wasn't producing a blu-ray drive for that Xbox, so it is pure speculation. Expect to see a new console within that year. Submission + - Phobos could form Saturn-like ring around Mars (arxivblog.com) 1

KentuckyFC writes: "Astronomers have known for some time that the martian moon Phobos is gradually spiralling in towards the Red Planet at a about 20cm per year. At that rate, it'll hit Mars in about 11 million years. But one researcher is suggesting another fate (abstract). He calculates that long before Phobos hits, the planet's gravitational tidal forces could break it apart. And if that happens, Phobos will form a Saturn-like ring around Mars. The timescale? About 7.6 million years from now. That's a blink of an eye in astronomical terms"
