Submission + - Jailbreaking iPhone now Legal (appleinsider.com)

whisper_jeff writes: "The U.S. government on Monday announced new rules make it officially legal for iPhone owners to "jailbreak" their device and run unauthorized third-party applications, as well as the ability to unlock any cell phone for use on multiple carriers."

I would imagine this news will hasten the (official) arrival of the iPhone on rival networks in the US.

Submission + - Nerds still more likely to get bullied (scientificamerican.com)

trashbird1240 writes: A story at ScientificAmerican.com reports on a recent meta-analysis of bullies and victims. They found that bullies and victims have similar personality traits, but that bullies tend to do poorly in school, as opposed to those who get bullied. Both bullies and victims are poor social problem solvers, but they resort to different tactics to handle their social ineptitude. To me this represents a huge leap forward in understanding nerd psychology.

Submission + - Ballmer: Microsoft To Go "Hardcore" on Tablets (businessinsider.com) 1

gbll writes: Steve Ballmer says Microsoft is "hardcore" about making Windows 7 slate computers like the iPad.

Ballmer delivered a keynote speech this morning in Washington DC at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC). The focus of the speech was on Microsoft's cloud operations, but Ballmer did say Windows 7 phones and slates were coming this year.

Microsoft listed all the partners for Microsoft's slates and phones. Twitter user Javiergc highlighted that HP might be working with Microsoft on a slate, after all.

Ballmer also said he expects to sell 350 million Windows units this year.

Submission + - Google to employees: 'no more Windows' (tuaw.com)

trashbird1240 writes: We first heard rumors of this policy change a couple of months ago, but now it's made the papers: the Financial Times is reporting that Google is phasing out the use of Windows internally, as employees are migrated to either Linux or Mac OS X on machine turnovers or new hires. The policy change was precipitated in large part by the security breach attributed to Chinese hackers; Google's IT leaders apparently feel that Microsoft's OS represents too great a risk across the enterprise to leave it in place.

One of the only ads I saw during the Super Bowl (I was much more interested in the dip at the party) was for an Android phone that included a clip of "David After Dentist." Since Youtube users don't give up the rights, Youtube (or Motorola or whoever's ad it was) would have to obtain rights from the owners (the kid's despicable parents) somehow.

Comment Disgusting (Score 1) 234

This is truly disgusting and overall sad. Videos of intoxicated adults are rarely funny, but videotaping a child on drugs and selling it is completely pornographic. These parents ought to be ashamed of themselves. They ought to get their child privileges revoked right away. Right on to adosch and wcrowe.

  1. "have": YouTube is an single corporate entity and not plural
  2. "having major issues": dangling modifier, does YouTube or Flash have the issues?

Perhaps the author isn't American; did you think of that?

Comment Providing a good experience = $$ (Score 1) 426

I get really irritated when I hear people making these concessions in the name of "providing a good experience." What they're talking about is staying competitive so that they can keep making money. There's nothing wrong with that, morally, ethically or otherwise. So why can't they just say it? Record companies are the same way: they always do this silly stuff in the name of people enjoying the content. For once I would like to hear some corporation just say "We'd like to support X, but for now we think the better way for us to make money is to support Y."
