Submission + - UK newspaper web sites to become nearly invisible

smooth wombat writes: Various web sites have tried to make readers pay for access to select parts of their sites. Now, in a bid to counter what he claims is theft of his material, Rupert Murdoch's Times and Sunday Times web sites will become essentially invisible to web users. Except for their homepages, no stories will show up on Google.

Starting in late June, Google and other search engines will be prevented from indexing and linking to stories. Registered users will still get free access until the cut off date.

Submission + - Intel Abandons Discrete Graphics (thinq.co.uk)

Stoobalou writes: Paul Otellini may think there's still life in Intel's Larrabee discrete graphics project, but the other guys at Intel don't appear to share his optimism.

Intel's director of product and technology media relations, Bill Kircos, has just written a blog about Intel's graphics strategy, revealing that any plans for a discrete graphics card have been shelved for at least the foreseeable future.

"We will not bring a discrete graphics product to market," stated Kircos, "at least in the short-term." He added that Intel had "missed some key product milestones" in the development of the discrete Larrabee product, and said that the company's graphics division is now "focused on processor graphics."

You don't think that executing him for bribery might make the next guy to think if it's worth accepting one?

While in general I oppose the death penalty, IMO if anybody at all is to be executed, it should be the people in the ruling positions. Their decisions affect millions of people. So their actions should be closely monitored, and important failures ruthlessly punished.

It's such a tragedy the people who decide on the punishments are the people ruling.

They weren't designed to be insightful or informative - they were designed to catch the eye and mind. It was advertising all the way. The principal concern was the size of the the words so that they could all fit neatly on top of the article. People nostalgic for those headlines must be the kind of people who thought them up, because they were rarely funny and often groan inducing.

Submission + - German Court rules against Pirate Bay ISP.

baptista writes: The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) won a victory in a German Court against the Pirate Bay. The court issued an order against the dutch owner of CB3ROB to stop service to the Pirate Bay, The article in the register assumed wrongly that CB3ROB is a German ISP. It's not. It's dutch. Sven Olaf Kamphuis, aka Count Olaf of Cyberbunker, is the outspoken owner of CB3ROB. http://bit.ly/92JG2E (The Register)

I used to work at the Cyberbunker with Sven so here's some history on it.

The Cyberbunker hosting facility referred to in the story is a former cold war military installation in the Netherlands. It is now owned by a Herman Johan Xennt (formerly Herman Johan Verwoert-Derksen aka Xennt). Xennt is a convicted felon in the Netherlands. He was arrested years ago on drug traffic charges for manufacturing ecstasy in the bunker and tax evasion. Sven Olaf Kamphuis was also arrested on the same drug charges. Kamphuis is known to the Dutch police for hacking several government computer systems.

Shortly after Xennt purchased the bunker he declared the property independent of the Netherlands, named it the Republic of Cyberbunker and installed himself as a constitutional monarchy. Kamphuis aka Count Olaf is a minister in King Xennt's Government. More information on the Republic of Cyberbunker is available at http://bit.ly/c4Xs6m

Incidentally the Cyberbunker is full of bunnies. This is a video I made of the Cyberbunker and the bunnies in 2005 http://bit.ly/PffbK

That was the one nice thing Xennt had to his character. He cared for stray animals like bunnies. Beyond that he is a reprehensible con artist who has destroyed families and stolen their life savings. I've met a few of these victims.

There is a related story I wrote on how a school in German was scammed by the Cyberbunker crew http://bit.ly/87Yjir

I support the Pirate Bay but I am concerned it's hosted by criminals these days. I know what they can do. I trained the ring leader.

Submission + - Portal Available For Free (steampowered.com)

tsj5j writes: In celebration of Steam's recent Mac release, Valve has made Portal completely free till May 24th with no strings attached (besides the requirement of the free Steam client). This isn't a trial, you get to keep it as long as you download it within the promotional period. As Portal has scored great reviews from critics, it's certainly worth a download.
