Comment Orwellianism (Score 1) 95

There are so many CCTV cameras everywhere now they're scarcely seen as Orwellian anymore. This is despite the formation of aforementioned networks and the use of AI overlords to track people with facial recognition. This is a bad thing(tm) from dystopian science fiction that has become a reality without anyone batting an eyelid

Comment d'EU is making a lot of this mandatory (Score 3, Interesting) 107

Partially as a protectionist measure to prevent Chinese car manufacturers coming in but also the usual safety & Orwellian reasons. I think it would be great if cars like the Ariel Nomad were more popular here. The EU has pretty much killed off the kit car scene throughout Europe. They want us all to drive connected cars that they'll eventually have full control over.

Comment Open source cars (Score 1) 160

We need open source hardware cars but the barriers to entry are too high with all the regulation involved in car manufacturing. A shame really, it would be great if the Kit Car scene was much more accepted worldwide. Even in UK where it originated it is being suppressed to a point and the EU plain hates non-mass-produced cars and has created laws to drastically reduce their numbers.

Comment Re:Belarus Tractors (Score 1) 54

It is normal for tractors to last 40 years. Boats and planes also quite regularly stay in service for longer than 40 years. Its just mass-produced cars that need to be refreshed with non-backwards-compatible models every 7 years, the only mode of transport with shorter replacement cycles are single-use rockets LoL. A model pioneered by the USAian automotive industry. Ideally we would be using body-on-frame construction with standardised engine mounts but the industry is too reliant on the upgrade treadmill.
