Man Who Downloaded Bomb Recipes Jailed For 2 Years 741

chrb writes "Asim Kauser, a 25-year-old British man, has been jailed for two years and three months for downloading recipes on how to make bombs and the toxin ricin. Police discovered the materials on a USB stick Asim's father gave to them following a burglary at the Kauser family home. Asim pled guilty and claimed that he only downloaded the materials because he was curious. A North West Counter-Terrorism Unit spokesman said, 'I also want to stress that this case is not about policing people's freedom to browse the Internet. The materials that were downloaded were not stumbled upon by chance — these had to be searched for and contained very dangerous information that could have led to an explosive device being built.'"

however, "privatized" doesn't mean the same thing as "elimination".

this is what i see when "privatization" comes up, and such a "privatized" TSA is no different than the current one IMHO

Submission + - Supreme Court say Warrant Required for GPS Trackin (washingtonpost.com)

chill writes: The SCOTUS ruled unanimously Monday the authorities need a probable-cause warrant from a judge to affix a GPS device to a vehicle and monitor its every move.

“We hold that the government’s installation of a GPS device on a target’s vehicle, and its use of that device to monitor the vehicle’s movements, constitutes a ‘search,’” Justice Antonin Scalia wrote.

A shorter summary is available at the Washington Post.

they don't need an executive order because if you read the decision carefully you'll see it says:

We hold that the Government’s installation of a GPS device on a target’s vehicle and its use of that device to monitor the vehicle’s movements, constitutes a “search.”
===
thus they only need to outsource the "installation" part to a third party and they can continue with the search. Mobile phone (preferably with carrierIQ) looks like the most promising candidate since ciq is already installed on a lot of mobile phones and is only waiting for a trigger to start reporting.

Submission + - Supreme Court: GPS devices equivalent of a search, (wired.com) 2

gambit3 writes: "The Supreme Court says police must get a search warrant before using GPS technology to track criminal suspects.

The court ruled in the case of Washington, D.C., nightclub owner Antoine Jones. A federal appeals court in Washington overturned his drug conspiracy conviction because police did not have a warrant when they installed a GPS device on his vehicle and then tracked his movements for a month."

It sucks for the store too. So you get a socket set and find it's full of rocks rather than sockets. You go back and complain. The store has too choices.

1: they assume you are telling the truth. This means they are stuck with the loss and for all they know you may be the one trying to screw them.
2: they accuse you of lying. This means they will likely lose you as a customer and may well get badmouthed all over the internet

i vote for #3
3: do both 1 & 2, just as futuresop did in this case.

Google Caught Misbehaving By Kenyan Startup 383

An anonymous reader sends in an interesting story from Mocality, a company that painstakingly built a business directory in Kenya. When they discovered that somebody was systematically harvesting the contact information they'd collected (and after a few very odd phone calls from confused Kenyan business owners), they set up a sting to see what was really going on. They swapped out the phone numbers listed for a few businesses with phone numbers in their own call centers, and then waited to see who called. Mocality was shocked to discover it was Google Kenya, who falsely claimed a business collaboration with Mocality, and then lied about Mocality's business practices.
