Cell Phone Cost Calculator Killed In Canada 214

inject_hotmail.com writes "Internet and law genius Michael Geist writes about some shenanigans by the cell phone carriers and the Canadian government in his column in The Star. Canadian taxpayers funded a 'Cell Phone Cost Calculator' so that the average person could theoretically wade through the disjointed and incongruent package offerings. The calculator wound up being yanked a couple weeks before launch. Geist suggests that the major cell carriers lobbied the appropriate public officials to have the program nixed because it would bite into their profit if the general public could make sense out of pricing and fees. Geist continues, 'Sensing that [Tony] Clement (Industry Minister) was facing pressure to block the calculator, Canadian consumer groups wrote to the minister, urging him to stick with it.' Moving forward, Michael makes a novel suggestion, one that would show an immense level of understanding by the government: 'With public dollars having funded the mothballed project, the government should now consider releasing the calculator's source code and enable other groups to pick up where the OCA (Office of Consumer Affairs) left off.'"

Just to add to the horse-shit, there was a key difference between the early computer industry and the nascent private space industry. Two guys in a garage could start a small hardware or software company and have a shot of success. Getting a rocket to orbit or manned flight takes a few more resources than maxxing out your credit card to buy an Altair or even an Apple II.

Iran uses it military to attack US forces in Iraq via its bomb supplying proxies. It uses it proxies in Lebanon to attack Israel civilians with missiles. It uses its proxies in Afghanistan to attack US and government forces. In most cases, the proxies are aided directly by members of its elite Revolutionary Guards. When its people protest a statistically false election, they are beaten and shot in the street, while the propaganda machine tries to lame the West for "inciting" the protests. And some total dumb fucks, like you, seem to believe them.

Additionally, Iran has illegally mined international waters and killed US sailors with mines. (Google Operation Praying Mantis). Iran's president was likely personally involved in the illegal hostage taking of US diplomatic personel in the 1970s.

My issue with the DX is that you can download newspapers, but not as an image of the front page -- just as a list of files. If I wanted to do that, I'd use a web browser. When I can d/l a paper and read it like a paper -- lots of stories per page, ability to scan quickly over it all -- I'll buy one in a heartbeat. I woudl guess that's a few years away though.

Submission + - Can you catch mad cow disease from fish? 1

calzones writes: Three U.S. scientists who believe about it's possible to contract mad cow disease by eating farmed fish want the government to ban the common practice of feeding cow product/meal to fish.

From the article: 'We have not proven that it's possible for fish to transmit the disease to humans. Still, we believe that out of reasonable caution for public health, the practice of feeding rendered cows to fish should be prohibited....Fish do very well in the seas without eating cows.'

What if we just ban the practice of feeding dead/sick animals (or those unfit for human consumption) to ALL ANIMALS? It seems as if all these meat packing industry 'efficiency' practices are basically sick and perverted and lead to nothing but human misery and illness. Maybe using them as fertilizer or something would be ok.
