You have a source on that? I can't find that response reported anywhere.

Even if the Navy do appreciate it as a training exercise, I'm sure they could plan an exercise with similar benefits at at time that doesn't involve dragging the entire crew of a naval frigate away from leave with their families in the week before Christmas.

Courage, will, sailing skill.....and a shitload of Australian taxpayers money to be rescued in the far Southern Ocean when things go pear shaped.

Sailors who take on the Southern Ocean for the thrill of it should come with a "Do Not Rescue" message on the beacons. Or they should self-fund their rescue missions in advance.

On demand movies, TV and sports for one thing. Cable TV in Australia is (in my opinion) extremely overpriced and uncompetitive in content. The option to deliver HD content over the internet to 90% plus of the Australian population would change that dramatically. But guess who owns that Cable TV company and wouldn't want the status quo to be disturbed?

Where was the outrage when this spying was brought to light by Snowden? Where was the public protest to have it stopped?

Once this amendment was proposed where was the communications to your representatives to ensure that it was passed?

You (the people as a whole) may not have known about it at the time of electing the current government but you voted for spying by not doing enough to have this amendment passed.

How fast does that sailboat go when there is no wind?

Commercial transport ships can't afford to sit around and wait for favourable wins. This technology may not improve enough or scale up well enough to become commercially viable for large-scale use for commercial vessels, but it has a much better chance than all-wind powered (i.e. better than none).

Also, diesel and other fossil fuels are also solar power if you really want to get technical about it.

Comment Re:This is stupid (Score 1) 164

If you are going to get technical about it where do you think the energy from oil based fuels ultimately came from?

The difference between using battery power (with the batteries charged by solar all on-board) and wind is you can use the batteries even when there is no sunlight. Sailing when there is no wind doesn't last for very long at all.

Wind power will never be efficient enough to enable large transport vessels to use it exclusively. Solar+Batteries is a very real possibility of doing so.
