While I would like to believe that MariaDB has done clever things with query planning and execution, it would need a much more rigorous investigation than posed here. Concrete is much more practical than carpet, and often more attractive. I have parquet here, but concrete would work just as well. Carpet would be yuck. It's also not used in tropical climates (i.e. much of Mexico) because it would quickly rot.
