Looking at Intel's New-ish Desktop Socket, LGA 1366 100

Slatterz writes "LGA 1366 is Intel's first new desktop socket in four years. It uses the same ZIF design as the familiar LGA 775 architecture, but it incorporates many more contacts. These big architectural changes are backed up by some less visible advances. Until now, Intel's quad-core processors have been constructed from two dual-core dies, but now Core i7 brings together four cores on a single die. It's also Intel's first processor design to use an L3 cache, shared between all four cores."

Comment Slightly disturbing... (Score 1) 334

i'm slightly disturbed (but not entirely). a fair portion of my fave tracks i've bought on old, crufty Physical Media but haven't bothered to rerip an already "pretty good" scene encode (i'm an -m s fan that refuses to break the habit). thankfully most aren't RIAA artists.

maybe someone wants to analyze the data that Last.FM outputs? (i didn't RTFM .. yet)

No Russian Operating System, At Least For Now 105

Elektroschock writes "The project by 27 Russian parties to develop a National Operating System for Russia has not taken off, yet (Russian). Ilya Ponomarev, the responsible technology committee chair in the Duma, received a negative response from the government. The government argues that the project and Open Standards would not impact the society and economy. Parliament members regret the setback for Russia's digital independence. Ponomarev wants to find other interested partners in the Government now." The Google translation makes it tough to tell whether this project is actually dead, or just shelved for the moment. Any Russian speakers out there who can parse it with greater clarity?

For Super-Tough Spider Silk, Just Add Titanium 53

A team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Germany has been experimenting with ways to infuse biopolymers with different kinds of metals. Finding some success with their tests on spider silk, the team was able to improve the tensile strength of the fibers, increasing the amount of energy required to break a strand as much as ten times. "Spider silk is not a practical engineering material, but materials scientists are trying to produce artificial fibers that mimic its properties. If they succeed, the result could be super-tough textiles. Knez thinks the technique has more immediate potential for toughening other biomaterials such as collagen. 'Mechanically improving collagen using our technique might open several new possible applications, like artificial tendons.'"

it's not like you can simply move it around. the site is a monster in needing resources. you can't just throw it on a shared hosting account and it work. it is/was a one-stop convenient collection of torrents. break off into hundreds of smaller sites, and it's a pain in the ass to find what you're looking for. it's not that it's "music collected that people couldn't have bought all in the first place," it's that the fucked up RIAA and its fucked up control of 95% of airwaves. small, unknown, or international bands are not going to get played on the radio. people looking for music that's not meant for strictly radio play can only find it by doing a "rip, burn, share" or whatever the term is. i've bought almost all of what i've repeatedly listened to this year and recent years (but never would have heard on the radio). that which i haven't, isn't exactly something i pop down to a store (or even Amazon) and buy a lossless/physical copy ...

and i've gone to pretty good lengths to buy my music... Hadron Collider Relaunch Delayed 223

SpuriousLogic writes "There's been another delay in the schedule announced for getting the Large Hadron Collider switched back on — now it's September 2009, a year after it shut down due to a malfunction. Scientists had said they expected the $5.4B machine to be repaired by November 2008, but then pushed the date back to June 2009, before the latest delay."

How Will Recent Financial Downturns Affect IT Jobs? 372

An anonymous reader writes "So, with the financial crisis and loss of jobs everywhere, what are the chances of getting a good IT job? I'm going to graduate this year with a BS in Software Engineering majoring in Network Security. I'll be looking for a job as a penetration tester eventually, but I hear that is hard to get right out of college so I'll be looking for a job as a Junior Network Admin or similar type of job to start off in. Is there a lack of jobs in this field? I figure computers always need fixing so they have to have some sort of IT personnel on staff to maintain the core of their business. Anyone have a good insight on this issue?"

they already HAVE turned the power up, at least locally. back during the Olypmics, i couldn't even get the local NBC affiliate. i checked recently, and i'm getting between 90 and 100% "signal strength" and "signal quality" from all stations, even the local Hispanic one. and i'm ground floor of an apartment in one of the vallies in our city.
