Comment Re:Trust Sony? HA! (Score 1) 587

One of the conditions for using PSN was to get the updated firmware which removed the OtherOS feature. Granted, I don't play multiplayer online hardly at all, but missing out on a firmware update because I wanted to keep OtherOS got things more muddied and complicated (BluRay updates and such). In the end, I capitulated and lost OtherOS. I wasn't happy about it, because I never got the chance to fiddle with it. (I know, late to the party... etc. etc.)

Sony started out on the right foot with the PS3, but it quickly deteriorated into what Sony does best. The undeniable fact is that Sony is out to make Sony richer, however it doesn't have to come at the expense of customer loyalty or goodwill.

But a part of this that I find highly interesting that there's no mention of physical media.

I suspect it's an afterthought. It will be a BluRay player, and I suspect that only movies (and the odd game compilation that you have to install to your "cloud") will come on optical discs.

People were wondering how Sony was going to kill used games. This just might be it... To be perfectly honest, I am not really keen on the new ideas coming from Sony. I am not interested in the ephemeral nature of "games in the cloud". I think it's a step backwards, but it's a cash cow for Sony and Microsoft, because they're looking to go whole-hog into this business model... customer be damned.

I knew it was bound to happen sometime, but consoles are now something I won't buy. I have a backlog of PS2 games to last me until doomsday... so I don't think I'll run out of things to play (just devices to play them on, I imagine...) heh.

OtherOS: removal didn't affect anyone, Linux on the PS3 was terrible. Anyone that used it could have told you that.

That's not the point. The point is I paid for it and they removed it. It is not unlike a car owner taking his car in for an oil change and the manufacturer removing the radio... It's not the radio... it's the principle of Sony being jerks.

You can keep your PS4 and XBox 720. I am not interested. Save your fanboy slobbering for the Sony forums.

Maybe that's why Microsoft partnered with the other firms and Michael Dell to take Dell private. Maybe Microsoft wants to make Dell its hardware division for PC/Tablet/Phone...

I think the OEM's should be rightly peeved over this (if the Dell thing pans out), and couple that with the "hey, we're making our own Tablet" turnaround at Microsoft should be the final nail in the contemptuous relationship Microsoft has had with OEM's (since the birth of the company, that is.) I mean Microsoft didn't even tell OEM's about the Surface.... They knew about it the same time we did. I'm no genius, but that's not how your foster good relations with your OEM's.

I didn't have 5. I had 3. I stopped at 3, getting tired of the whole deal. There have been people who have had plenty of the old style consoles replaced. This isn't an isolated incident. Just google the track record of the pre-slim quality and you will see that 5 is about average if you gamed more than 15 minutes at a time.

The quality problem with the 360's hardware is precisely one reason why I won't be getting Microsoft's next console (720, whatever). And since Sony took Linux install from my console, I won't buy Sony's box either. The problem I attempted to illustrate in the original post was the huge outcry about the 360's lack of quality (along with 4 or 5 also-ran posts where someone's launch 360 still runs, even though they've been playing on the sun 24/7), and the reams of rants about Sony and their lack of security. Couple that with the removal of a feature on a Sony product and you had lots of mad people (myself included.) I wonder how many who posted will follow through? It'll be interesting to see... but difficult to correlate. :(

I'd rather play Nethack anyway.

Verisign signs keys and can sign your bootloader with Microsoft's key if you want, or you could use your own key and install it on your system or you could turn SecureBoot off.

See, we paranoid folk have seen enough of Microsoft's tactics in the past to believe that it starts out fine and open... "sure use your own key".... but soon it's "your key? HAHA!" (cue mustache-twisting Ballmer in a black cape and stovepipe hat). Those of us who are suspicious can be a little pedantic, but we're just going on track record here, and Microsoft's is abysmal. It's not an indictment of EFI, or the consortium behind it. It's and indictment of the greed of Microsoft and its hatred of Linux.
